Report

Report:Not the start the new season the new captain had in mind. We knew that we were missing our no 1 to the first team, but wasn't expecting to loose our no 2 on the morning of the match due to a "tickly cough". The word "tart" springs to mind.

Anyway, Mr Sick Note was helped out by Alex (he who wears tight tee shirts) making his debut for the team. Although Alex played well, he came up against a very good no 4 and was eventually beaten 3-0.

On the other court Steve was unable to find a good enough reason to pick a scrap with Garth (Mr All-round-bloody-nice-bloke), so couldn't get himself motivated enough in the first two games. In the third Steve did well to grab defeat at the hands of victory by losing a 7-2 lead thereby losing 3-0.

By all accounts Dan started well in his match at no 2 and took the first game. However, he soon lost concentration as the smell of the food wafted on court and ended up losing 1-3.

Comments from others said that Graham had a good game at no 5 and won comfortably 3-0 using his newly strengthened wrist action. Now we know what he has been up to in the bathroom!

As for my match, before I knew it I was 0-2 and looking at an early shower. However, I some how managed to win the 3rd in spite of Ollie's extraordinary speed around court and that he retrieved almost every one of my winning shots. The 4th was tight and at 8-8 I called 1 point because I didn't think that I had enough energy to get 2 points. Fortunately things went my way to set up a 5th decider. Although I won 9-1 this doesn't reflect how closely contested it really was.

Depressed by their loss, both Dan and Alex decided to take solace in beer and food. With tee shirts already at maximum tension levels, they both went for second portions before waddling off together to catch the bus. (I'm glad they didn't take up my offer of a lift as I'm not sure the suspension would have coped.

Finally, thanks to Phil, Nick & others for coming along to support the team.
