Report

Report:This was the longest and most enthralling match Bromley have enjoyed in a while. Paul opened against a Chris who seemed to have the edge from the start, finding the right shot while Paul struggled with his consistency. As the match wore on, Paul used his straight drop to advantage, Chris tiring. I missed the 5th but Chris' resistance had crumbled in the 4th. Kevin and Sean meanwhile also looked set for a long tussle. Sean was uneasy with Kevin's disguised boasts while Kevin was bemused by Sean's deep drives achieved with minimal backswing but greater consistency. An engaging match that should have seen a 5th game - instead it fizzled out, the only excitement being the arrival of an aggressive, self-appointed assistant marker, of whom more later. Ray looked set to deal with Keith in 3, but Keith, nothing if not a fighter, had other ideas. The parts of match that I saw were strewn with errors but it is hard to hit winners from Ray's sliced drops and these, in turn are vulnerable if the opponent steps forward, as Keith did later in the match. Meanwhile, Andy disposed of Mark with great efficiency, all the more impressively as Mark was playing well and would have troubled a lesser player. With the rubbers drawn at 2-2, it was up to Peter to lead Bromley to their first victory of the season. All went well in the 1st, Alex finding difficulty with the lob serve, especially on the backhand side. The next two games were anyone's although considerable psyching, advice to the marker and aimless ball-hitting between points reduced the proportion of actual play. Notwithstanding this, unforced errors were few and the games were strong on tactics despite unnecessary aggression. The hopeful captain weakened in the drive department towards the end - a frequent failing - whereas Alex used consistent low forehands as well as reverse angle backhand returns to good effect when given the opportunity. So, some time after 11.00, Bromley had to be content once again with 2nd place. Oh Yissus!!
