Report

Report:With our full strength team out for the first time this season, BCC were looking to give the early league leaders a run for their money. With support being provided by the OBP’s (Old Boys Posse), expectation for a BCC win were high.

Having managed to re-arrange this weeks appointment at the sexual health clinic, first on was Steve at number 5. Things didn’t start too well as Steve gifted the first two games with some unforced errors in the later half of both games. After a quick word about his racket positioning, Steve went on to win the next two games in some style. Although Steve went 3-0 up in the fifth, Fraser hit back with a series of backhand boast winners and went on to win 9-3 taking the match 3-2.

On the other court was the old timer, Ali, playing at number 3 against Matt who was young enough to be his grandson. Only saw the fifth and deciding game, but was impressed how Granddad had rolled back the years to play some excellent squash. In spite of Granddad taking a 7-3 lead in the fifth, the young upstart held his nerve to take the match 3-2.

Didn’t see any of the number three’s match as I was on at the same time, but heard that the first two matches were competitive. However, Dan had to stop in the third due to cramp. I guess the previous weeks holiday in Spain with Mrs Sweeney with all that “In door activity” had taken its toll.

My match at number two was a low key affair. First two matches were nip and tuck (yes, tuck) early on, but I managed to pull ahead in the later half of both to take a 2-0 lead. I seem to recall some long rallies early on in the third that took there toll on Neil more than me which enabled me to go on and take third 9-5 and the match 3-0.

At number 1 Neil was maybe thinking he’d met his match as Ross came with an unbeaten record and without having dropped a single game. There was some hard hitting by both players in the early exchanges, but Neil always had the edge with the more clinical shots and went 2-0 up. For the second week on the trot, Neil’s superior fitness (I can’t believe I’m saying this) allowed him to take the third game comfortably 9-2 to win the match 3-0.

So although BCC were defeated 2-3, bizarrely we actually won more games that Acacia Hall. A morale victory at least.

In the absence of Mr Tight Tee-Shirt there was plenty of food for everyone this week. Steve decided to abstain from the food due to his poor performance early on. Most of us just thought that this was due to his shorts not having the capacity to expand any further.

Not much banter between the teams as both stuck to their respective halves of the table, but I did spot the young Matt glazing over as Granddad recounted his match and offered around his Werther’s Originals. Conscious that the care home closes earlier on week days, Granddad scooped up the left over cake and made his leave.
