Report: | The last match of a long summer season which Dulwich won narrowly 3-2. Player rotation at Dulwich almost backfired, with Olly Ruff pulling out through illness and the author of this piece preferring the healthier option of drinking ale, supporting the boys and enjoying the company of a thoroughly sporting lot from Bromley LTC after the match.
For some, the best seems to be left to the end. The choicest piece of meat on a forerib of beef, the crispiest roast potato and so on. Steve Harsum produced his best squash of the season to beat Tom Morgan. Had Harsum played at this vertiginous level throughout the season he would have been unbeaten. Harsum also cooked for the first time this summer, following the tradition at Dulwich of players preparing the match supper. Beef casserole, basmati rice and peas. Delicious.
Of the other matches, Nick Easton produced a commanding performance, winning 3-0. Bromley LTC have a strong junior in Nick. We wondered whether he was coached by his father Terry, especially when he started throwing in Terry's trademark cross-court cut drops which have frustrated (and beaten)many an opponent. Ron beat Ian Armstrong 3-0. Mr Armstrong has decided that the drop shot is not going to part of his game. Ron worked that one out early on and the rest as they say is history. Ben G who successfully swam from Alcatraz to the mainland now negotiated a tricky opponent to win 3-0. Kendall at no. 1 also produced some excellent squash for Dulwich to take the match 3-2 by beating Iam Hammerton 3-0 and seems to be coming into form for the winter season.
At Dulwich we have enjoyed the summer. It is always a delight to play a hard squash match and enjoy a beer afterwards. Congratulations to the squash players who represented Park Langley 2nds for winning the league. They were consistently the best team over 18 matches, which is a difficult task with injuries, illness, and the debate on that matter of global importance, PAR to 11 scoring. Maybe a United Nations resolution will be needed before battle commences in October, or at the least a parliamentary debate. Come on Ken get your typist on to it.
Look forward to all the squash in the winter.
