Report

Report:Oh dear. I was predicting a 4-1 or even a 5-0 victory for BCC prior to this match. How wrong was I. With Waterfront bringing in their new number 1 and with BCC losing their number 5 on the day, it was advantage to Waterfront.

First on were the number three’s. With a combined age of 104 (or does Simon just look older than his age?) this was a battle of the wrinklies. Simon took an early lead to take the 1st game, but then Ali starting to find his range and made it 1-1. At 2-1 in games Ali then took a big lead in the fourth and was serving for match ball. However, Simon – the more spritely of the wrinklies – dug in and saved 4 match balls to take it to a fifth set. With his hair dye streaming down his face, things didn’t look good for Ali as he started sucking in air like a goldfish. Eventually the younger wrinkly came through to win 3-2.

On the other court were the number 4’s. Fresh from a stunning victory last week, Dan was in confident mood. Oh dear. Dan looked in control in the early part of the first two games, but then let Sid take over. At 0-2 down it was now or never for Dan. Oh dear. It was going to be never as he lost it 0-9.

The number 5’s was a clash of youth verses experience. Or put another way, fresh legs verses knobbly knees. After the first game it looked like a 3-0 thrashing for BCC’s old knobbly knees, but using all his court craft (miss hits, double bounces, etc) he managed to level it 1-1 and was looking good to go on to win it. Oh dear. As the match wore on the knobbly knees started to buckle and the fresh legs come through to win 3-1.

The number 1’s match was an eagerly awaited affair as BCC’s yet unbeaten Neil went up against a former ranked player. I was on court myself at this time so didn’t see any of this, but by all accounts it didn’t disappoint. There were lots of good quality rallies but, as Neil conceded, Marcus always had the edge with his greater quality shots and pace around court. 3-0 to Waterfront’s ringer.

By contrast my match with Dave at number 2 was a low key affair with only the marker watching although even he was tempted to turn his back and watch the number 1’s on the other court. I went 2-0 up which Dave put down to a series of “unforced errors”. Funny that, I remember him saying the same thing the last time I beat him. Having stopped his “unforced errors”, Dave rallied back in the third to make it 1-2 as I made a series of “unforced errors”. I took an early lead in the fourth game before we had several hand in hand out exchanges with nobody taking any points. Eventually I took the game by the scruff of the neck to win 3-1 and having made the least “unforced errors”.

There was a change of venue for the refreshments as it was back to the old Rose pub. With a change of management the legendary infamous cheese and onion sandwiches were replaced by French stick sandwiches! I didn’t realise that Woolwich (shortly to be twinned with Paris) had joined Europe.

Moment of the evening was when a certain Waterfront player was propositioned by the local madam. BCC's elder wrinkly couldn’t believe his ears and almost dropped his Nobby’s Nuts.

Whilst the Waterfront player mulled over his options (or was he just too embarrassed to get up as an involuntary body reaction meant that he would have to leave bent over), I noticed the others eyeing how quickly they could get their bags just in case they were next in line.
