Report: | With a run of 3 defeats and with the bottom teams catching us up, a BCC win was desperately needed. This was going to be difficult as we were playing against third placed Blackheath, but as I mentioned in my email to the team before the match, if everyone won and we only dropped 1 game between us, then we could go above Blackheath in the league. A highly unlikely result given current form, but it does you good to have a target to aim for and so it proved.
First on was the number 5's. After a long series of defeats BCC's Steve was looking for a win and said that if he didn't beat Neil, then he was going to give up squash. After he lost the first game it looked like Steve was going to need another hobby. However, the thought of long evenings in with Mrs P gave Steve the impetus to up his game and he came back to win 3-1. However, we had now dropped a game so couldn't afford to drop any more.
Unusually, I was also first on at number 2 with Chris. During the warm up Chris was hitting some deft shots and I thought that this might be tougher than I was expecting. However, Chris must have saved most of his winnings shots for the warm up as they didn't materialise in the match and so I had a comfortable 3-0 win.
Next on were the number 4's. This had an international flavor as England (Dan) took on the Springbok (Alex). England started well but was susceptible to making a few unforced errors to allow the Bok back in. England went 2-0 up and were looking comfortable to put the over physical Bok firmly back in their place. However, the third game was a much tighter affair but England came through to win 3-0. Swing low, sweet chariot, coming for to carry me home....
As Old Man Ali was slowly going into a comma whilst waiting for his opponent to turn up, on went the number 1's. Andy (Blackheath) came to this match undefeated whist Neil (BCC) was still smarting from his first defeat the previous week. Andy started the better taking the early points, but Neil started to pick up the pace and came back to take the first game. There were some good early exchanges in the second, but Andy made some unforced errors and then just gave up the last few points for Neil to take a 2-0 lead. By now Neil was clearly on top of Andy (poor Andy - Neil is still a hefty 16 stone) and came through to win 3-0. Andy was well and truly flattened after losing his undefeated record.
Having woken up Old Man Ali (OMA) from his dribbling deep sleep, on went the number 3's. With BCC winning 4-0 and with only 1 game dropped, could OMA make it 5-0 without dropping a game? Given the combined age of both players was 148 (up on last weeks 104), this match was going to be over quickly either through someone winning 3-0 or someone having a heart attack. Early exchanges looked good for OMA as he moved even Older Man Keith (OMK) all over the court. OMA took the first 2 games with each game point being won with a dead nic. Despite OMK being a game old sod, he was no match for OMA who went on to win 3-0.
So the dream win had been achieved. Nobody was as surprised as me, but with a large number of 2-3 losses this season, we were due a good win.
It was good to be back eating at home after last weeks unpalatable food. With duck, roast potatoes, carrots and peas and tiramisu for desert (read and weep Waterfront) everyone was impressed. There was even enough to feed a few spectators. There were some sorry looking vegetables left over, but thats enough about the Blackheath team.
I'm off on my hols soon, so it's up to Mr Leffen to carry on the good work. |
