Report: | As the home team captain doesn't do match reports it falls to me to provide a few words on the events of the evening.
Given that our number 1 (Neil) struggles to find his way to his own club without asking directions, I was a little nervous about whether he would make it to Poultwood given its location was somewhere in the outback. Imagine my surprise when on arriving there was Neil in the reception area nonchalantly practicing his swing. Turns out that his appearance was due to the recently purchased monkey say, monkey do sat nav rather than his own navigation skills.
So on went the number 1's first. Didn't see all of this but Neil cruised the first two games but lost the third. Something like normal service resumed in the fourth and Neil ran out 3-1 winner.
Given the absence of Poultwood's number 3, 4 & 5 (probably got lost on the way), I went on next with Craig at number 2. The first two games were fairly close affairs with lots of hand in hand out, but I managed to win both 9/4. The third game was more one sided as I hint a series of cross court nics (otherwise referred by team members as miss hits) to win 9/0.
Next on were the number 4's. The warm up and first game suggested a comfortable victory for Dave (Poultwood) who took the first game 9/3, but hold the back page. Having now warmed up his old bones, Graham rolled back the years and ran down run and chased everything. However, having spent large amounts of energy to win back the serve, Graham duly gave back the serve to Dave as he constantly put his own serve out of court. The casual observer might have thought he was just being overly generous to Dave, but his fellow team members knew that it was simply because he just can't serve properly. In spite of Graham's generosity on his serve he somehow managed to take the next three games to win 3-1.
On the other court were the number 5's. As Ross (BCC) took the first game 9/0 it looked like he would retain his 100% priory record and go on to win comfortably, but hold the back page again. Mark's retrieving started putting Ross under pressure and he tinned a series of easy front ball drops to give Mark the next game to make it 1-1. They then shared the next two games to take it to a deciding fifth game. Ross started off the better and despite a mini fight back from Mark, went onto to win 9/2.
Last on were the number 3's - Alan (Poultwood) and Dan (BCC). Looking more like Little and Large, if this was a wrestling match it would be no contest. Unfortunately for Dan it was a squash match which involved running especially as his opponent was Alan. The first two games were very tight with both going to a tie break which they shared 1-1. Thereafter Alan was the more consistent player and went onto win 3-1.
As we stood in the bar afterwards, I was wondering what gastronomic delights awaited us given the good food on previous visits. Imagine my stomachs disappointment as the waitress served up plates of chips and sandwiches. Perhaps Waterfront are doing Poultwood's catering now.
As we all made off for the long journey home it was no surprise that as two of us turned left out of the car park Neil turned right. Obviously the sat nav had packed up. |
