Report

Report:This all Dulwich affair was the epitome of amateur sport and a cogent reason why squash should be an olympic sport. But hey ho...we dont have the global stardom of synchronised nose twitching, some daft game called rugby "sevens", and those professional games where the elite are about as interested in winning a medal as they are in mud wrestling with a hungry crocodile.

At the civilised time of about 7.45p.m. a group of squash players rolled up after their daily toil and enjoyed some hard fought competition on court followed by a decent beer. Hockey, another properly amateur game, used to be like this and Great Britain went on to win a gold medal at Seoul after coming second to Australia in the world cup.

The 3-2 scoreline to Dulwich 2nds is a wee bit illusory. Though, had the second rubber match gone to the fifth game then there might just have been an upset on the cards. Steve Harsum and Andy Claudet produced the match of the evening. Attacking squash played at a brutal pace which was a delight to watch. No tedious line and length stuff here. This was like a Latin samba, fast and skillful. All that was missing was the writhing, organic (yes that word is spelt correctly) sex appeal of a Brazilian babe. Messrs Harsum and Claudet might be good at squash but that is where the analogy stops.

Incidentally it was a pleasure to mark, as I understand were all the games. One can only hope that this will be a feature of all Priory matches - after all we are amateur squash players and not blinged up footballers.

Matt had a minor hiccup for which I was grateful and am still celebrating - these wins at my tender years are rare and so are savoured in the same way as the aforementioned Brazilian dancers. Ed Knox had a resounding 3-0 win over new boy Duncan to set up the finale between Nic and Steve. Nic was unfortunately outplayed 0-3 by Steve who seems to be in awesome form along with Brendan at number 1 who beat Ben 3-0.

Good luck to Dulwich 2nds who should have a good run if they remain injury free. As for Dulwich 3rds, a tremendous performance as always by the boys with mid-table glory beckoning.
