Report: | Bromley travelled to Blackheath last night with a fair degree of optimism as for the first league match this season we had both our No.1 and 2 players available. However Blackheath showed exactly why they are top of the league having won every match so far. They fielded a team that was strong throughout and ran out fairly comfortable winners on the night.
Features of the night were a particularly impressive performance from Andy playing at 1. Yes that is the same Andy who lost to Steve Pusey in the Summer season last year. I am sure Neil looks forward to getting his revenge on our courts in the return fixture.
A fairly fractious encounter between the number 2s. I didn't see any of it, which is probably just as well, due to marking duties. A change of marker was required in this one, and it fell to Panji, as he was by far the biggest bloke around, to take charge of matters. The match ended with a win for Tony and what sounded like a frank exchange of views betweeen the players as they came off!! All good fun...possibly.
A creditable performance from Dan in taking a game off Phil who is making good progress after a long injury layoff. It will not be long before the Blackheath man wants his No.1 spot back in the team.
It was "good" to see Panji playing his first game of the season and Alastair gamely agreed to play on the night on the basis that it didn't matter whether he or I played as we both would have got hammered - thats the spirit. But he wasn't wrong.
Another creditable performance also from Alan who only got the call up to play about 5.00pm. Rich was soon in his stride and as everybody knows he does like to give the ball a bit of a wallop and when the ball goes in that court's infamous backhand corner at speed it doesn't come out. Not as you expect anyway. From 2 nil down however Alan staged a great comeback and after briliantly winning the 4th game to 1 was looking good to go on and win. Rich decided otherwise, and regained the focus of the earlier part of the match to take the decider.
So a disappointing evening for Bromley, but maybe a long overdue appearance from the above mentioned Mr Pusey soon may bring a change of fortune. |
