Report

Report: With a visit from the league leaders plans were put in place a week in advance to make sure we got out our strongest team. What I forgot since my last time as captain was that you should never make assumptions when it comes to our team players and common sense!

With Old Man Ali out with a back injury and Neil not aware he was even playing as he couldn’t work out how to read his emails, things were looking grim. However, on the evening (literally) things worked and we ended up with one of our strongest teams this season.

Playing at number 3, I was expecting a comfortable win but Panji had other ideas. Having lead me into a false sense of security by letting me win the first two games, Panji started his fight back and hit some good drop shots from the back of the court that caught me out each time. Sensing Panji was getting back into the match I inexplicably changed my game and tried to out hit Panji. Bad mistake. With the games at 2-2, I thought it was time to start using my brain again, but at 0-5 down I was thinking about sending out a search party for the missing brain. However, due to a combination a mistakes by Panji and some dogged determination by me I managed to win the game 9-7.

On the other court was last minute replacement, Paul, playing at number 5 and making his Priory debut. Turned out that Paul and Dave were old adversaries and took a trip down memory lane like a couple of old farts before being reminded that there was a squash match to play. Didn’t see any of this but Dave nicked it 3-2.

Playing at number 2 were Neil and Phil. Ordinarily I would have put my mortgage on Neil winning, but given to recent lack of squash in favour of beer and food, I had my doubts. Fortunately Phil made a few unforced errors in the first two games and Neil was moving around the court well so won both of these comfortably. The third was a more close affair with Neil nicking it 9-7, but had he lost that game then even Neil admitted that he would have been worried about his fitness levels to last out the match.

Didn’t see any of Dan’s and Rich's match at number 4 as I was marking, but judging by the scores it looks like Dan ran out of puff in the fifth as he lost it 2-9.

So at 2-2 in matches on went to number 1’s, Adam and Andy. As our other last minute replacement, Adam looked a bit tentative at first which was probably due to him aggravating his back injury again last week. However, after some initial close rallies Adam ran out a comfortable winner by 3-0.

With fish pie and peas on the menu, Neil decided to abstain but not because of his new fitness regime but because he “…doesn’t do fish”. Instead he settled for a jumbo bag of crisps – the alternative healthy option.
