Report: | Well what a stark contrast this weeks team was to last weeks.
Once again “Old Man” Ali had to withdraw due to another health problem. (I think the time has come to take him on a one way trip to Digitas, Switzerland).
As I mentioned that I was struggling to get a team of 5 able bodies to Neil during one of his Monday night booze sessions up the club, he manfully stepped up to the plate and made himself available. However, once his head had cleared of lager the following day, he quickly stepped back down off of the plate.
Having gone through a long list of players to get someone to play without any takers, I finally reached the bottom of the barrel and asked Tony “Mad Dog” Hall. To his credit he was up for it straight away, but then again at his age it is good to get out any night.
After picking a fight was his opponent last time they played, Steve was on his best behaviour and was being as polite as could be. He even offered Robin a swig from his drinks bottle between games (yuk). However, the politeness went too far as Steve handed the match to Robin 3-0.
On the other court Ross and Craig were having a bit of a ding dong match and trying to out hit each other. Result was that Craig hit the tin less often and won 3-1.
As “Mad Dog’s” opponent hadn’t arrived, Dan and Paul went on next. I saw the first game and wondered whether Dan was holding his racket in the wrong hand as he lost 9-1. The come back started after he was 2 games down, but Dan blew a 8-2 lead in the fourth to lose the match 3-1.
By now “Mad Dog” was frothing at the mouth as his opponent still hadn’t turned up so I went on with Jake. Not much to say about this match suffice to say I won 3-0 too easily and didn’t even break into a sweat.
Having finally arrived, “Mad Dog” went on the show court with Alan. Although BCC were down 3-1 in matches, the crowd were willing “Mad Dog” on to win his debut appearance for the team. However, Alan had other ideas and took the first 2 games. “Mad Dog” started off well in the third game and went into an early lead. During one rally “Mad Dog” asked whether his opponent had been CRB checked after a particular close bit of contact. In the end “Mad Dog” turned into “Gentle Pussy” and lost 3-0.
The food was excellent with plenty of seconds which Dan took full advantage of. Maybe he is now regretting this as the text that I received from him this morning mentioned something about an upset stomach.
“Mad Dog” made the most of his night out and offered Dan and Ross to a race even though at 63 he is older than their combined ages. He then threaten to call up his 90 year old dad, “Mad Dog Senior”, who would be more than willing to come and bash them both up.
Having text absent fellow team members with the result, I couldn’t believe Neil had the front to reply “…I should have played”.
