Report: | The Hermanator is back!
With the winter season about to kick off the one question that remained unanswered in the Tunbridge Wells camp was “who are we actually playing?” David Lloyd isn’t a name that’s featured on the radar before, although suspicions were that this was actually the old Amida, so the last people we expected to turn up were the amateur arm of Biggin Hill!!
Paul kicked off against Dean. This was a runfest. 5 games of it. Run, run and run. And then run a bit more. Didn’t see the finish, but clearly Dean had a bit more in the legs and came home 9-2 in the fifth. Good bit of fitness in the bank for both players.
On the other court was Jolyon vs Adam. Jolyon got off to a flyer, few errors and tight orthodox play, aided by mistakes from Adam’s racquet. The first two games were rattled off in quick fashion. The 3rd was a different beast altogether. Adam made less mistakes and started to find the better length of the two players. Neck and neck for the first half of the game, Adam pulled away and reached game ball first. Jolyon clung on against the momentum of the match which was definitely shifting, and managed to sneak the third 10-9. 1-1 in the match.
By this point Colin was one up against Guy on the other court. Not sure how many times these guys have played but it must be in the thousands. Colin looked to be tiring as the match progressed, and Guy mercilessly reeled him in, confidently taking the next 3. 2-1 to David Amida Lloyd Hill.
Andy vs Toby. No idea what to expect from this one. Andy is continuing to improve and is in a decent vein of form. Toby still hits the ball as crisply as is possible, has all the shots, but clearly has some “issues” with mobility and fitness. So it really came down to whether Toby had enough with the racquet to put Andy away without having to move. And the answer was no, as Andy himself did move but also had enough skill to keep Toby from playing shots at whim. The match swung quite wildly in favour of one player and then the other. Not many hand outs, just large chunks of points. Toby won the 2nd but nearly blew it, and nearly won the 4th but did blow it, along with the match. Another good scalp for Andy, although hopefully we’ll see a properly fit Toby back soon.
The decider. The Hermanator vs Dan. The Hemanator’s rigorous pre-season training regime has involved complete absence from the squash club since the end of last winter season, aside from a warm up hit with Paul at the weekend. We were all a little nervous about this, except for Paul who had total faith in Herman. “He’s South African. He’ll be fine” he muttered, but given that Herman’s game is based on touch, usually the first thing to go after any prolonged period of absence, we weren’t so sure, especially in the pressure cooker situation of a deciding tie in the Kent Priory League Div 1!
How wrong we were though! Everything was in tact, drops, lobs and general court cunning. If only squash were than simple for the rest of us mortals. Instead of training, we could spend our leisure time doing fun things. Wouldn’t that be great!!??
It should be mentioned in the interest on not being completely biased that Dan has also been injured and absent from the squash court in recently. But why ruin a good angle for the report?
General relief swept across the club after Herman’s match. Not at sealing the win, nor at having finished this epic contest before 11pm, but at Toby’s announcement that he wouldn’t be staying for food. The price of beef fell, but a fair portion for the rest of us at least, along with a few drinks and some decent chat. Overall a well contested tie and good company. Look forward to the return leg……………….
