Report: | A quick summary to introduce PL's winter campaign seems in order. Last night saw PL visit Bromley CC for the season's opener.
A very encouraging result for PL, repaying the dedicated summer's training efforts (well more than BCC's anyway). With PL's new beefed up lineup for the winter, London jnr took to the court first against Lewy. This one seemed to go on forever. It was almost a very hard training session with both players concentrating on power and length. After a whacking in the first Steve exerted control to wrap up the next three to get points on the board.
Meanwhile Long John Silver's more able bodied brother (a very much two legged DC - there, eased it in for you Ray) did battle with El Cap. These two bosom buddies went at it hammer and tongs as usual, with the match ebbing and flowing one way then the other. El Cap had enough left in the tank to squeeze through for a good win in the 5th and even things up.
Next up London snr v McMeckan.J. A bit of a re-run of their second summer match. James press-ganged into reluctant action and sporting a collection of injuries that really look like they need a rest, at least made it to the end of the match this time. The author did the necessary while James struggled on manfully, unable to get to the front really. So, PL up again after this went 3-0.
Next door, Rintoul v Robbins didn't seem to be on too long. This was done and dusted before the author had a chance to open his reporters notepad. My spies tell me that JEJ was in pretty tidy form, and Martin probably had his mind on other things. So another 3-0 to PL.
Last up was a battle royal between another pair of old chums - Stabler v Lennox. Honours were evenly shared throughout, with both players having purple patches and spells in the doldrums. ML exercised his full vocabulary as frustration got the better of him in the 2nd, but got it back on track after some consultation with the PL coaching staff. Sam was quieter than the author can ever remember, confining himself to several sarcastic looks up at an unimpressed marker - DC (who did a pretty good job from where I was standing).
Mark really got it going when it mattered in the 5th, but Sam actually played pretty well. You just can't ever think a ball has gone for a winner with AGFB around.
After match fare and banter seemed well up to snuff, with the author even tempted. All in all a good start for PL. |
