Report: | A good win last night for PL. Fitness First came down and gave it everything but in the end PL were a bit too strong. Banished AGAIN to the graveyard courts as the PL seconds and thirds bashed it out on the others.
First up London snr v Smith.
A tough battle with lots of rallying from both players. The author just about managed to keep his nose ahead in the 1st before going 0-5 down in the 2nd. A comeback later and a tough 3rd that belies the score and PL had points on the board. Only one full length dive from the man who apparently has a reputation for them.
Out in the sticks, London jnr v Soliman.
Didn't see any of this, but Steve's account made it sound like it was a labour too far for both. Mo captured the 3rd with what he described as several frame shot nicks, but normal service was resumed for Steve to edge the 4th and take the win.
Next on Lennox v Magor.
Mark apparently blitzed the 1st, and narrowly failed to take the 2nd. After this point however, Joe's consistency and Mark's evident frustration started to see the balance shifting. As ever, full marks for effort from the PL man, but the odd loose ball gave Joe just enough to ease through and take the match in 4.
Back outside, Robbins v Powell.
A workmanlike display from JEJ was enough to see off Fitness' new no.1. Johnny looked to be striking the ball nicely from the bit I saw, but James always just had that bit too much. The ball was pinging around but there was some pretty tight looking stuff coming in from both players. JEJ eased through in straight games.
Last on, PL's newest signing McManus v Hogwood.
A good natured match this one. Gordon has already put in his bid to have all coloured courts repainted in traditional white as he chuntered on about his inability to see the ball. Well, for someone who couldn't see the ball he looked to be reading it pretty well to me. It was only really the short stuff that was misfiring. After his normal slow start which saw John powering tight drives around to take the game, Gordon appeared to get into his stride. The 4th stands out in particular, with John being dispatched in a single hand.
Overall a tidy win. Off then into the madhouse in the bar with six teams fighting over the sparse chair allocations. The firsts being left to contemplate next weeks trip to Dulwich. DC guesting at the 1st team table seems to have it all mapped out ... |
