Report: | Just a brief report on last night's proceedings. A good win for PL against Rodmersham.
First up London jnr v Baker.
Neil was very magnanimous in the bar afterwards, pointing out that Steve had clambered off his sick bed for this encounter. Nonetheless the game saw Neil playing extremely well to earn his victory. Steve covered a lot of court but couldn't quite get a consistent enough length, and every time he tried to push it short there seemed a good chance of a mistake. The chairman of the PL squash committee even got a reaction test from Steve's racket as the frustration level grew! All in all, a good win for Neil.
Next up Thompson v Clark.
Didn't see any of this one but from the glimpses across court it looked to be a close fought battle. Martin C won the first pretty comfortably judging by the score (never a good sign for usual fast starter MT), but the tables were turned for MT to run out winner in four despite several game balls for MC in the 4th. Honours even in the match.
Next on London snr v Woods.
Having started off well and then faded very fast in their last encounter, the author determined to go back to basics this time round. Concentrating on consistency and length, the tactic was to lure Tom into going for it too early (not hard to do)! This tactic paid handsome dividends with Tom saying afterwards that he just hadn't felt like he was at the races from the start. 3-0 to the author.
Next door meanwhile - Lennox v Parker.
Mark felt he hadn't played too badly in this one. It was just a shame that every ball he hit was dispatched short or into the nick or both. "Just like playing a pro" was the Lennox verdict. In truth, when this happens there's not a lot you can do. Malcolm can be a nightmare to play in this form, and so it proved, and the court wasn't even cold! So a good 3-0 for Malcolm to take the match into a decider between ...
Robbins v Brewer.
John seems to be in one of his non-playing phases at the moment, and with JEJ looking sharper these days, the result didn't really look like it was in any doubt. Nevertheless John's mobility was impressive and this coupled with a variety of overhead nicks made very entertaining viewing for the not inconsiderable gallery that had assembled at the end of the evening. In the end though JEJ had too much heavy armour and saw the match out 3-0 to record a good win for the home side.
All that remained then was to make an unsuccessful attempt to keep the bar bill down! Looks like the 2nd team's system of fines may soon be introduced to make up the shortfall ... |
