Report

Report:PL visited David Lloyd last night expecting a tough match and so it proved.

First on were London jnr v Wilde jnr.
Didn't see any of this (being on the other court), but my spies tell me it was a controlled performance from Steve. All I saw was Jamie going for a badminton style overhead rolling nick at match ball down (and getting it). So, another typical Jamie match then!

Next door, James v London snr.
The author struggled to get to grips with the court in this one, repeatedly pinging the ball out into the middle. Much ranting and railing against the retention of only the grippy walls from the old Howdon courts ensued while Paul quietly went about winning the points. Thankfully for the author things improved a bit in the 3rd and 4th, but one huge rally at the end of the 4th drained the author's fitness reserves and Paul took the 5th pretty easily.

Next up Parrish v McManus.
Mr Doom and Gloom McManus had been keen to point out that the last time he'd played Stuart he'd got "about 3 points", but nevertheless, having got his usual slow start out of the way, started to play some good stuff. Stuart became more and more frustrated, and from where I was sitting the D.Lloyd motivational tactics (think slag your player off for losing embarrassingly to an old git) backfired. The racket was the main casualty of the match as Gordon eased through in four.

Next door, Olby v Robbins.
The usual quality battle between these two. JEJ looks to be in pretty good motivational shape these days, and both players covered a lot of court, mixing in a lot of varied shots to provide an entertaining spectacle. One of the D.Lloyd receptionists had obviously never seen squash like this judging by her reaction after watching a couple of gruelling rallies. Let's hope her opinion carries some weight (ho ho) when D.Lloyd consider whether to keep the squash courts (no this is just speculation based on other D.Lloyd centres in the past). JEJ rounded off an impressive performance to take the match 3-0, but the scoreline didn't do justice to Guy's performance.

Last but not least, Lark v Thompson.
Having donned the team socks (after forgetting his own), Martin got off to his characteristic fast start against Dan. Revenge was extracted by Dan in the 2nd to level, but aided by a few too many mistakes from the Lark racket, Martin took the 3rd and 4th to win 3-1. One had to feel sorry for Dan. He is possessed of amazing court mobility, but too often his racket-work let him down, putting a lot of balls into the tin despite valiant efforts.

All in all a good evening for PL. Gordon went hungry, but everyone else seemed happy to actually get some food other than sandwiches as the handover from Amida days has apparently yet to extend to the catering.
