Report: | A snowy night saw BCC visit PL for a long drawn out battle. The presence of Paul Johnson as BCC's "reserve" added a large contingent to the crowd, with PL this time being somewhat outnumbered on their own patch.
First up London jnr v Rintoul.
On cold courts this was a match of mainly short rallies from what I could see whilst marking next door! Martin was going for it in his usual fashion, and seemingly having a rest on each alternate game. It looked a good match and Martin got to match ball up 8-6 in the 5th. Steve wasn't to be denied though and squeezed through to take it in the tightest possible finish.
Next door Culver v Ryall.
This started off much as expected with WB hammering Lewy off court in the 1st. False sense of security and all that though as Lewy got warmed up. WB sneaked the 2nd - just but in the 3rd got given a good run around. This continued into the 4th as Lewy blitzed off to a 6-0 lead. Not to be beaten though, a terrific fightback saw WB come back and take it at the death in the 4th. A very good match.
Next on Robbins v Johnson.
And so to the main event of most people's evening. Nice to see PJ back on court again as I'm informed he hasn't played too many matches in a while. Obviously hasn't affected his touch too much as he got off the mark in double quick time, pushing JEJ all over the place to take the first at a canter followed only slightly less impressively by the 2nd. After this a bit of lack of match fitness maybe (though you'd have been hard pushed to detect it), combined with JEJ upping his game saw a comeback to 2-2. PJ still had enough left to take the 5th and pull a tie back for BCC.
Next door Lennox v Stabler.
Sam started off looking like someone who hasn't been on court in a while and Mark reeled off the 1st pretty quickly. By the end of the game the signs were starting to look ominous though and sure enough Sam got into his stride, covering the court amazingly well, and despite a gallant fightback in the 4th Mark couldn't quite do enough to take it to a 5th.
So, all square and all on London snr v McMeckan.
Having arrived looking like Sherlock Holmes minus pipe, James clearly had a pressing case to get back to Baker Street for, as he shot out of the blocks at a high pace. The author indulged in his usual glacially slow start and was staring down the barrel of a 27-0 at the end of the 2nd. Eventually arising from his slumbers however, he started to find a length at last and clawed the next two games back to take it into a decider. Unfortunately the comeback stopped there though and James had enough left in the tank to take the 5th and thereby the match.
The author's day was perfectly rounded off having been at the club unfashionably early at 7pm, off court at 11.10pm, collected up the marking sheets where they'd been strewn, wandered off to the bar to attempt to get a soft drink only to be told that "sorry we can only do you a water, we've cashed up" and then gazed out of the windows at the encroaching blizzard. Oh and then found out that most of his team had spent all their match fees at Christmas. I always wondered why I bothered with this running a team lark. I still am, though I did eventually end up getting the drink after threatening to withhold the tab money. Desperate times require desperate measures ... |
