Report: | PL1 entertained Rodmersham on their newly refurbished courts last night. Well they could have saved themselves the bother (the courts that is - Court 2 in particular was finished to a coarse grade sandpaper finish).
Anyway, on with the match, and Tom won't be disappointed to see me lay into him (since I told him I would) about Rodmersham's "proud" record of only ever fielding club players. After I'd finished introducing their new no.5 to them (not that he needed it really other than as a wind-up), the match got under way.
First up London jnr v Baker.
Played on the sandpaper court most of the early exchanges resulted in balls pinging out into the middle of the court, with Steve looking out of sorts and close to boiling point. He eventually managed to get back into it and sneak the 3rd from a long way down as Neil became a bit tentative when in front. Same story in the 4th but having got back from a long way down to lead 9-8 Steve couldn't convert the game. First blood to Rodmersham.
Next door Lennox v Clark.
Could only see bits of this out of the corner of my eye whilst on marking duties but ML appeared to have controlled it pretty well as Martin's triathalon training doesn't seem to have positively affected his squash. Honours even and ML far more interested in working in a match report reference to "the chubby Russell Crowe" (take it out on him Martin).
Next up London snr v Woods.
Revenge here for Tom as he returned the compliment after their last encounter. A good first game but from the author's point of view, rapidly downhill thereafter, with Tom cutting the ball out early to good effect. A comfortable win for Tom.
Next door Robbins v Parker.
JEJ looked, from what my spies tell me, to really be struggling in this one. It later transpired that this was due to a long 5 a side footy match the day before, which saw JEJ aching all over and being made to pay by Malc. He did eventually get it together enough to live up to the moniker, battling through to sneak a 3-2.
So, all down to the last - Thompson v that Rodmersham through and through stalwart: Appleby.
Exceedingly late recruit Graham did what he usually does - eased in and confounded his somewhat jaded looking opponent with those trickle boasts. The PL coaching staff were dispatched to the Thompson camp to provide some priceless nuggets of wisdom - step up the pace and pressure etc, and for a game it seemed to have done the job. Martin however grew increasingly more despondent looking as he struggled (a) to get round an unimpressed Graham and (b) to dig balls out of the corners as the joke of a wall surface made everything deep, die immediately.
Graham closed it out pretty comfortably to take the win for his new teammates.
Not an overly auspicious occasion for PL who now enter a black-hole on the squad front as the top end disappear to opposite ends of the world for many weeks (and the middle order go away too for the next couple of matches)!
The coming weeks are looking like providing much material for Mr McLeod ... |
