Report: | I cannot believe that PL snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in last night's humid encounter.
It all seemed to be going so well. Firstly the weakened PL team without their top-end again were relieved to see that Mr Rintoul was absent, somewhat evening it up.
First up Thompson v Horder.
After their marathon last encounter which Martin sneaked at the death, it all seemed like an action replay. Martin out of the the blocks at a ferocious pace, going 2 up. After that Matt started to wear him down and hauled himself all the way back to claim the match (and revenge) in another marathon.
Next door, Lennox v Ryall.
Mark started off in dominant fashion against a strangely subdued Lewy in this one. After taking the 1st at a canter though, he proceeded to reel off a load of mistakes to lose the 2nd. The pattern was repeated for the 3rd and 4th, setting up the 5th nicely. Lewy kept it steady while Mark lost his way from about the middle of the game. Another tight victory to BCC and suddenly not looking so good for PL.
Next up Pratt v Peel.
The return of the whirlwind! After another 1 year+ retirement PL were pleased to welcome back the prodigal son. Steve seems (if this performance can be used to judge) to have decided the old wild ways perhaps weren't the best idea. 18 months of ring rust were impressively swept away as he turned in a good performance against Nick who also put up a good show. Apart from lapsing into his old tendency of getting bored while a long way ahead, losing the 4th from 6-1 up, this was a good win with a lot of control. Welcome back, and PL's only win of the night.
Next door McManus v McMeckan.
This all Scottish sounding encounter got off to a good start for Gordon. Turning his usual tactics on their head, he was off to a flying start, taking the first two games. At that point, Gordon's analysis was "I was dead once he started whacking the ball". Youth won out in the end, despite a sterling rally to narrowly lose the 5th.
Finally, London snr v Stabler.
The author, though not in the best of confidence of late, was looking to try and get a bit more out of this one than their first half encounter. It started unusually well as Sam was the one who was slow out of the blocks (obviously the warm weather favours those creaking bones). The loss of the 3rd from game ball up didn't deter the author from battling through to 2-2, but the wheels came off in the 5th with too many mistakes, allowing Sam a relatively untroubled game to take the match despite looking pretty knackered.
So, lots of losing points, but PL left feeling that it could have been so much better. There are still some weeks to go before the return of the cavalry, so to continue the military analogy, we'll soldier on 'til then.
A late finish with the usual bar-side banter, notably from an ebullient Debt Collector who obviously felt his victory on an adjoining court entitled him (using his own charming vernacular) to "rip the p*ss" out of the 1st team. Mind you, as the author can testify, he seems to be a man on a mission at the moment. Retirement looming DC ...?! |
