Report

Report:The title was won tonight at the Dulwich Bowl, that is unless the authorities look into it and find that Tim has committed a crime worse than last year’s misdemeanour!

It was good to see two sides with the requisite number of players, so thanks to Mark for making the effort to rustle up a reserve. First on was that twelfth man Gurkan, who had seen off his a opponent last week with a walkover but found Steve a more stern test. Enjoyable run-a-round saw Steve home in four, though not quite sure what the stewards would make of the dropped third when cantering to victory.

Next up was the top strings with Ben a little leg heavy just back from the Irish Open, and to even things up Tim clearly so confused by his many jobs that he thought he was playing Summer Surrey Cup! This was a book-makers dream as the match ebbed and flowed, and neither player able to wrestle control. Tim edged the first & third on extended tie-breaks, Ben picked off the second & fourth marginally easier. The fifth was evenly poised at 6-6 before Tim played a nice couple of drives off the front foot to sneak home.

Brendan made sure he got a win over Elliott, knowing full well that when he returns in a few years from moving Down Under the shoe will be firmly on the other foot. As always over running the crease Brendan kept the pace high and tin count low to ease home in 3. Will followed suit with a straight games win over Chris who may have caught the eye of the authorities when stepping inside the final serve to the backhand to return it on the forehand, but how do you bet on that?!

Last on were Andy & Mark, as anticipated a high quality match ensued with both players striking the ball off the middle of the bat and barely a bad ball in sight. The umpire had little to do as both players moved the ball around, with Andy edging the first two games on tie-breaks, Mark digging in to take the third before Andy rounded off a fine night for Dulwich taking the fourth.

Olley’s was featured on BBC4 last week on the Great British Waste Menu supplying left-over scraps to Michelin star chefs, but there were no leftover in sight after the teams had devoured a fine Fish & Chip meal. No doubt about the food or result. Asif!
