Report: | With a narrow win last week over title contenders Park Langley, Biggin Hill needed to march on and march over a struggling Fitness Exchange. Although this said, history would suggest their team picker (Neville) could be known to pull out a few surprises lets just say.
Okay first up was a rejuvenated Simon Wanford for Biggin Hill against newcomer Carr for Fitness. Wanford started Hill's campaign in horrendous form losing the first two 9/3, 9/6. Then, as we all knew he would (Yeah right!), he spanked the life out of Carr with a crushing 9/1, 9/2, 9/2. Well done kind Sir!
On the court next door, team capitano and all round good bloke, Mark Lennox for Hill took on wilting captain Peter Whiteman. I say wilting only as a way of describing Exchange's form, not Peter's age. Moving on. Lennox broke a string in the warm up, then preceded to beg the debt collector (Bushell) for his nice new shiny racket, successfully done, he then when on to lose the first game 9/6 - I blame the racket. Then, and once adjusted to the new weapon, Lennox screamed home winning the following three games for a combined total 11 points. It's fair to say Whiteman's backhand drop shots would scupper even the greatest of players - especially on those freezing cold courts!
Back to court 1 where Hill's superstar signing Mark Aldridge took on Trevor (I hang around for a drink) Grant. Whilst Hill wouldn't usually pull out the big guns (you know what I mean Matt), they actually didn't have anyone else to call upon bar Mark - we couldn't turn up with 4 could we? Anyway, Grant got fourteen points in Aldridge's 3-0 drubbing.
So with the match in the bag, it was 'get as many points as we can time'.
The No. 3's, Bushell (Debt Collector), and G.Seed for Fitness Exchange took to the court. Now we know that against weaker opposition Hills Debt Collector is renowned for a 'no mercy' policy, "if he's there to be killed, then I'll kill him" is usually the battle cry. This occasion was no different. Not satisfied with the 9/3 in the first, Debt Collector then exerted a touch more energy to permanently scar his opponent 9/0 9/0. I'm sure he even gave poor Seed a look of "and it could have been 27/0 if I wanted to". Good work Bushell!
Last up was the in and out of form Gordon (tap turner) McManus against Simon (I never argue with the ref) Grey. McManus should have been expected to win this tie with ease but a resilient Grey for Fitness Exchange was to prove otherwise. McManus won the first 9/5 - no great surprises there, but when Grey pulled out a shock 9/3 in the second it was game on. Another crushing blow in the 3rd gave Grey a 2-1 lead and a glimmer of hope for his dwindling teammates, if only he was playing a player that would just lie down and die. Not to be, McManus still had his own pride and the pride of his team which he dearly loves. Despite being 7/0 down in the 4 th , McManus stole that game 9/7 and then just to prove he had life in the old wilbery yet, he administered a 9/0 in the 5 th to wrap up the match.
So there you have it, 5-0 to Biggin Hill and a stern message sent out to the other teams me thinks! I wonder how many Christmas cards Biggin Hill's captain and his team mates will get this year?..
