Report

Report:PL welcomed Bexley I to Langley Towers last night. This turned out to be an extension of a difficult start to the season.

First on Lennox v May.
Tom took control of this one pretty early on. Despite the usual 100% effort (the Waterboy - he's going to love me for that one, and I should talk) continued where he left off last weekend - on the receiving end. Tom played a lot of controlled squash and despite a blip in the 3rd that allowed Mark to battle his way back and claim the game from 5-10 down, ran out a fairly comfortable winner.

Next door London jnr v Ford.
Same old, same old in this one. Ben started pretty much as he finished, spraying in an array of shots from every angle. Steve got into his stride in the 2nd and despite a couple of game balls, was unable to close it out. The next two were closely fought with Ben using experience, reach and guile to push Steve around, but receiving back as good he he gave. Steve took both to take it to a decider. Once again, level all the way up to 9-9 when Steve tinned an easy drop with Ben a long way from the ball. A long rally to finish off a great match. This was a demonstration of amazing mobility and shot making from both parties - but the wrong result for PL.

Next up Robbins v Harrison.
These two old adversaries took to the court with Duane getting out of the blocks fast and getting into a 2-1 lead. I didn't see too much of this one, but most unusually for Duane I heard it. A frank exchange of views took place with James claiming to be unsighted, Duane claiming that was no excuse for a let and Mark (marking) claiming not to have seen what happened. Lots of claiming, a let was duly played and James was back in the match. Duane not a happy bunny, as JEJ lived up to his nickname for the umpteenth time to sneak it in five.

Next door, London snr v Donelan.
This didn't really go according to plan for the author despite playing reasonably well. Christian looked very sharp on the night, and despite the author's best efforts and three tight games, volleys and winners were flying from the Donelan racket a bit too often. 3-0 to Christian.

Finally, Pratt v Badger.
Steve seems to have succumbed to yet another injury now, and the old style of mistake ridden games is creeping back in. Couple this with some severely restricted mobility and it's not a good recipe. You always get the feeling with Steve that if you could point him in the right direction with sufficient focus for long enough you'd get a hell of a player, but sadly having all the right components counts for nowt if they aren't deployed correctly. Matt hung in there and was the more consistent. A respite in the 4th to take it to a decider wasn't enough for Steve, and another trusty weapon was dispatched in no uncertain fashion to racket heaven as the 5th went begging.

The usual banter in the bar afterwards with Christian sad not to see Ken there to wind up about Kent v Yorkshire juniors battles in days of yore.

Not the best result, but a lot closer than the score suggests.
