Report: | A full strength Tunbridge Wells visited Langley Towers for this wintry encounter last night. This looked destined to be a close one and so it proved.
First up Thompson v Bucknor.
In a re-run of their summer encounter, Martin was looking for revenge. Didn't see too much of this one but Martin obviously got off to his usual flier and then got pegged back by Paul. Perhaps largely due to the new PL1 training tactic (JEJ also) of consuming a large bowl of pasta within an hour of the match kicking off, Martin obviously had an abundant supply of energy and dug his way back in to sneak a tight 5th for a good revenge win against a very handy opponent.
Next door, London snr v Whiteley.
The usual dire start saw the author staring down the barrel of a 3-0 defeat. The first two games were reasonably well contested but it only looked like going one way. Thankfully the next two saw something of an improvement leading to a closely contested 5th. The author buried a simple drop in the tin at 5-2 up and the difference between 6-2 and 3-5 turned out to be enough to swing the 5th, with Ryan having more fitness at the end (and the rest of the match).
Next up Lennox v Flint.
Mark didn't sound too keen on this one as the last encounter between these two yielded precious few points for him. All I saw was the last few points of the 2nd, and at the end of this Mark suffered a bizarre back injury that rendered him incapable of continuing. Bearing in mind the way he throws himself around the court this was caused by the most innocuous looking movement, but the chill on the courts wasn't going to help that. Come back quick Mark!
Next on London jnr v Payne.
The expected kind of game here really. Colin produced some good deception at the front to keep Steve guessing, and returned some good stuff at the back too, but anything that required a modicum of movement to the front was quietly left alone. This should really have gone to five games but Colin let a couple of game balls get away, and both players looked happy to be off court.
So, all square in the match and as so often you could write the script for Robbins v Head.
JEJ having consumed the aforesaid giant bowl of pasta at 6.30pm got off to a relatively sluggish start as is his wont. Jolyon was playing some good tight stuff and took both of the closely contested first two games. You just knew what was coming though. JEJ does this every week. The pace was stepped up a tad, lots of tight balls particularly down the backhand, and slowly but surely he reeled him in, taking the next three at a canter to secure victory for PL.
A tight match, going right to the wire. Food consumption was conspicuous by its absence for the PL boys (no doubt the early pasta held more appeal than the post match ham, egg and chips). A good sociable match with TW a bit miffed to be on the wrong end of yet another 3-2 loss. |
