Report: | PL1 welcomed Dulwich to Langley Towers last night. Dulwich were looking as strong as ever, and even with Tim missing they were sporting a more than able replacement no.1 in Peter Genever, all of which made it look like a tough night for PL. In the event it turned out to be a good competitive match.
First on Robbins v Mesquita.
You could pretty much write a JEJ match report the week before these days. It's becoming formulaic stuff. JEJ stands on the T, moving as little as possible and as much as he is able and dictates play just enough to edge through in 5 games. Well, there you have it. Same again and a valuable win to kick things off.
Next door, Pratt v Taylor.
Paul started this one off looking (a) very calm - for him especially - and (b) a bit tentative. WW raced off into a big lead 7-1(ish). Sadly he wasn't able to follow up on the good start in this game and Paul sneaked it. Thereby hung the balance of the match as it later transpired. WW came back well after a few admonishments from the PL management and played more consistently to take a 2-1 lead. The effort was taking a toll though. Paul was wrong-footing WW and some trademark fast trickle boasts, mixed with delayed drives and drops had WW scurrying hither and thither. It stayed tight right up to the end though with Paul taking a very closely contested match. Match of the night.
Next, London jnr v Genever.
With Steve carrying a bit of a niggling injury this always looked a big ask. The 1st was a tough and close game up to 6-6 at which point a few cheap points finished the game. From the 2nd onwards Pete stepped up the court and the combination of exemplary movement and unbelievably tight drops forced Steve to take risks. Pete dominated the rest of the match despite Steve's efforts, to record a comfortable victory.
Next door, Thompson v Browsdon.
Didn't see too much of this other than out of the corner of my eye but it looked to be a good contest. Two tough games saw Martin down 0-2, but battling back to take it to a 4th. Will looked pretty consistent though and in the end a little too strong for Martin on the night.
So, all over bar the shouting before London snr v Moore took to the court.
The past few weeks have lifted the shutters a little on the author's gloom about his game in recent months/years. This proved to be a continuation of the improvement. Most unusually he was able to see where the ball was headed right from the off and got away to a good start. Andy's level of frustration built up steadily throughout the match and a number of mistakes issued from the Moore racket. The pattern of play continued throughout the match with the author wrapping up a good revenge win 3-0 to lend a veneer of respectability to proceedings.
60% of the Dulwich squad departed early to all ends of the country leaving the PL boys to rue their missed opportunity to sneak a good win but at least pick up good points in defeat. A rest week next week ... |
