Report

Report:PL1 played hosts to David Lloyd last night. This was a much reduced team from the first encounter though and the result proved pretty different too.

First up Pratt v Parrish.
Didn't see too much of this due to playing duties, but WW seems to have taken the PL coaching team advice after getting off to a shaky start and continued the upward trend with a good win, taking the following three games reasonably comfortably.

Next door, London snr v McManus.
(Very) old adversaries meeting up for the umpteenth time here. Gordon looked unusually sharp from the start dispensing with his usual two game deficit / wake up / come back tactics. I'm not quite sure how, but the author clawed the first game back from a long way down, got tonked in the second, and did the same in reverse in the third. This set the match up for the deciding factor. There were a few gut busting rallies in this one, and Gordon was leaning on the racket after them. The author still being in reasonable order at this point was able to just do enough to close it out despite a couple of missed easy volleys.

Next up Robbins v James.
What I saw of this looked to be typical JEJ, only with the movement starting to return a little. The injury is still there but once he got into his stride JEJ looked in fairly imperious form shots wise. Paul was doing nothing really wrong, but the Robbins racket was spraying around an array of shots ... well if you've seen him play you'll know what I mean. The 3rd and 4th consisted of 22 winners and 5 mistakes according to an impressed WW who was marking. A good win (as usual).

Next door London jnr v Olby.
This was an interesting one. Steve spent the whole evening trying to get a sight of the ball as Guy hits all of his shots very close to his body. I couldn't see most of them from the marker's position and Steve wasn't faring much better. Guy put in a very impressive shift in this one, displaying amazing levels of fitness as some of the rallies went on and on. Steve seemed to be just in command for the first half of each game, but Guy always dug in at the sharp end of the games, making it as difficult as possible, and pushing in an array of tight drops mixed with a lot of early attacking volleys. In the end though, a good win for Steve who covered every inch of the court with his normal effectiveness, whilst still not looking even slightly tired.

And so to the final match, Thompson v Lark.
Didn't see an awful lot of this one, but Martin didn't look terribly happy really. Despite hitting his usual brand of tight low drives and boasts, he was getting rather frustrated by Dan's speed around the court. I'd really like to see a spliced Robbins and Lark. That would be something to behold. Martin would have been significantly less happy to see that combination though, and despite a very tight 4th ran out a 3-1 winner to round off a splendid evening for PL1.

Nice to see some support from the 2nd team at the match as they aren't on 'til Wednesday. Good banter in the bar as usual, with fireman Pratt hoovering up all spare nosh as usual. A good evening.
