Report: | Well, where to begin? A strange day and no mistake. Libel in the morning, slander in the evening. I'm almost tempted to adopt a TG style, themed report for PL1's final encounter of the season - beware the Ides of March (a week late for that one), et tu Brute etc. Just as I was appointing my lawyers however, the libellous claims were withdrawn with a fulsome apology, and the author therefore felt happy to reinsert the all seeing one eyed lens before embarking on the evening's entertainment.
Anyway, enough of that and onto the match. First up London jnr v Steeden.
A decent run out in this as ever when these two play, Mark gaining his usual full marks for effort. Both players kept the ball pretty tight. Long rallies, and all played in good spirits. Mark seemed to have picked a good night to remember his reading glasses as he picked off several attempted wrong footing drives for outright winners. Still, despite a herculean effort to win the 3rd the inevitable result was forthcoming, and a good start for PL.
Next door, Robbins v Green.
Didn't see a lot of this (or the others as it happens), but JEJ was back on script again after the lapse last week at TW, even to the extent of losing the 3rd 11-13. Once again though, the form book never lies and JEJ came through when it mattered to round off another good season with only the single defeat to Adrian Grant right at the start. No disgrace there really.
Next up Pratt v Wyatt.
Didn't see a single ball of this match as I was on court but judging from the scoreline it was very tight. WW continued a good run, and finished off the season in style. Steve W's claim to fame will have to wait until later. Stay tuned.
Next door - London snr v Knight
This started off as an enjoyable and evenly contested match, with Elliot narrowly taking the 1st game. The author found a better length and width in the 2nd, inducing a few more mistakes from a frustrated opponent. Part way through the 3rd however the fireworks kicked off. A disgruntled Elliot let his emotions get the better of him and the rest of the match was conducted in a somewhat "tense" atmosphere. Still, the author brought years of "old man's experience" to bear, and did the necessary to further the team's cause (there you go Elliot - not too biased I hope)?
Last on, Thompson v Ganz.
Sadly, once again playing duties meant I saw nothing of this match. It seems Martin abandoned his usual modus operandi to lose the 1st and then win the next three games, to round off a fine end to the season for both him and the team.
Most of the entertainment ensued after the match, with Steve W keen (to his team's horror) to regale everyone (again) with tales of his derring do from, you guessed it, that comeback. It seems he's been dining out on that one since mid December and was in no mood to let anyone forget it. Glad to be of assistance Steve. At least I made somebody's day! Thanks to Bexley for an entertaining evening.
All in all a reasonable season for PL1. A dire start was overcome to place us firmly on the 2nd tier of the division. Onwards and upwards for the summer. Don't forget to appear at the AGM (in May) all you PAR haters, and vote it out. You know it makes sense ...
The Bexley bit.
Nice report Clive, well marked Steve.
Here are the stats for a relegated Bexley 2nd team. I do love the stats.
Mark pl 17 w 1 gf 13 ga 49 %gw 20.97 %mw 5.88
Matt pl 14 w 2 gf 18 ga 39 %gw 31.58 %mw 14.29
Steve pl 16 w 8 gf 29 ga 30 %gw 49.15 %mw 50
Elliot pl 12 w 4 gf 22 ga 32 %gw 40.74 %mw 33.33
Jack pl 11 w 6 gf 22 ga 21 %gw 51.16 %mw 54.55
Highlight of the season - Steve's understated win against Clive in the first half, a comeback from 10-1 down no less (just in case Steve hadn't mentioned it)
Let's hope the 3rd team beat Dulwich tonight and get promoted and hopefully i'll still be playing in div 1 next winter.
One last thing, Don't forget to appear at the AGM (in May) all you PAR lovers, and vote it in. You know it makes sense.... please god don't make it last as long as last time!!!
Oh, and Congratulations to the Bexley 1st team for winning div 1! |
