Report: | First match of the season and with a new number 1 expectations are high for promotion this year.
Steve and Alan were first on. Having missed most of the summer season Steve was back and looking determined. Trouble was so was Alan. Every time Steve seemed to win back serve he soon lost it again. At 0-2 down in games Steve would have previously let his head go down and lost 0-3. However, he fought back to win the third but judging by the score in the fourth Steve ran out of puff and lost 1-3.
Nick started his first appearance for the team in spectacular form and didn't drop a single point in the first 2 games. Peter made more of a fist of it in the third but Nick was always in control and won 3-0.
It was a frustrating night for Dan as Peter retrieved most of Dan's best shots and caught Dan out with his low boasts. Apart from a tight first game Peter had a comfortable 3-0 win.
The age difference between Ross and Peter (yes, another Peter) is probably greater than Dan's waist size - enormous. Ross started off well and took the first game but when granddad Peter started to put Ross under pressure Ross began to lose his way. At 2 games each the money was on Ross to beat granddad Peter in the fifth. Good job the bookies were closed as Ross threw away a 7-5 lead to lose 7-9. Seems that age is no substitute for craft.
So at 3-1 down in matches I went on with Mandy. I had my usual slow start and made a lot of unforced errors throughout the match. My only consolation was that I still managed to win whilst playing badly.
So not the start to the season I had predicted.
Whist Nick explained his marking decisions to granddad Peter, Dan and Ross took solace in their defeats by eating as much pizza as possible. By the end of the evening they were being to resemble Tweedledee and Tweedledum.
PS - Thanks to Al Leff for driving me home and then back to the club after having to get my spare set of car keys and thanks to Ali for marking two matches. |
