Report: | The setting was the coldest night of the winter season so far and courts that were a tad slippery, perhaps part of the explanation why Bromley's strongest, and most mobile, players found the going tough. Ron and Mike went on first and seemed to take the whole evening to get a result, the evenly matched pair vying for the killer lob, drop or cross-court drive. Everything else was retrieved. Mark and Peter had a more staccato match, each player winning strings of points at a time. It could easily have gone the distance if Mark's last string hadn't hauled him back from about 5-8 down in the 4th. Gareth and Peter M were just settling into a close first game when Gareth lunged for a shot and collapsed in pain with recurrence of a back problem and had to concede. Meanwhile Chris was in fine form, quickly disposing of Nick after a very close first game.
Any hope of an early start at the Anchor was scotched by Karl and Brian, first by being thrown off court through a cock-up over bookings and then by stretching to 5 games. Karl did less running but looked to be about to tire, though never did. Brian, whose game started very loose, at least by his standards, achieved better length and used his trademark boasts to good effect. Even so, he was lucky to win at 10-9 in the 5th.
The Anchor was well worth the wait, fine beer and a great meal greeted us when we eventually got there. Well done captain Mark J! |
