Report: | Based on Bexley's previous line up I was forecasting a win tonight but that all changed when Bexley turned up with a 1st team player and former professional women's player, Steph Brind. Lucky for us that we also drafted in a 1st team player due to a shortage of fit players.
Sam & Matt were having to come to terms with playing to proper scoring rules rather than those mickey mouse point for point rules they play in div 1. Matt adjusted the quicker and took the 1st game on a tie break. Sam then started playing more percentage squash and took the next 3 games as Matt made the more errors.
My match with Mickey was not as straight forward as the match score suggests. The difference was that I managed to score points when serving whilst Mickey didn't.
Despite my pre-match tactic talk to Dan about how best to play Tony, Dan went on and did his own thing anyway. Needless to say Tony won 3-0.
As our last minute replacement, Graham went on with Deno. I was hoping that Graham's dogged style would get the better of Deno but I hadn't taken into account the improvement in Deno's game. His shots have become more controlled and with his better agility around court than Graham's, Deno won 3-0 despite a good fight back by Graham in the fifth game.
So at two matches each the final match was between Nick & Steph. Bexley seemed blasé about the outcome of the match as their other players were either watching the football or reading the newspaper in the bar. The first 2 games were close with lots of hand outs. Nick just won the final couple of points in each game to take a 2-0 lead. At 7-2 up in the third it looked like Nick was going to win it for BCC, but usually he made a series of unforced errors to allow Steph back in and win it on a tie break. In the fifth it was nip and tuck early on but then Steph moved ahead and at 8-5 had her first match point. Nick dug in and eventually got back to 8-8 after Steph failed to take any of her 5 match points. Even the appearance of Matt on the balcony couldn't motivate Steph and Nick went on to win the tie break 10-8.
So my pre-match prediction was right all along. Phew! Only just. |
