Report: | Bromley knew that they had a game on their hands from Fitness First's early results this season but the team looked solid enough for a close match. This was not how it went though for the first part of the evening. Andy soon showed Mark how things were going to pan out: his crisp, hard drives were punctuated by consistent straight drops to which Mark had no answer. On the other match court, George was probing Ron, losing points initially but making him work and it the process exacerbating a delicate injury (pain in the butt actually) forcing Ron to retire. Terry and Paul had similar games and similar points to start with but their styles didn't mesh and after a rash of let balls Terry emerged the stronger, placing the ball more accurately and generally controlling the court. As Paul's frustration grew, his winning points were fewer, while Terry radiated confidence.
With the contest lost and things looking very bad for Bromley, Syd moved two games up against Tim who was struggling to find form. By the 3rd game his wrong-footing drops and then straight drives down the wall made Syd work harder, provoking more errors. But Syd was resourceful as ever and the final game was not a foregone conclusion. This left Carlos and Brian to battle it out in a fast and furious match in which Brian gave the court saturation coverage. Despite a hiccup in the 4th Brian was on song with pace and accuracy that Carlos couldn't match.
So well done FF2 with a 3-2 win and a generous haul of points. Similarly generous was the hospitality that Bromley will do their best to emulate on the return. |
