Report: | Having beat Wilderness 4-1 recently in the cup, I was anticipating getting the same result in our league match.
Paul and Mark's match wasn't one for the purists. I can't remember a single rally that went on for more than three shots between them. Serve, return serve, winning shot/losing shot. Thankfully Paul had the majority of the third shots with more being winners than losers. Mind you, that's Paul's third consecutive win so you can't argue with that.
Ross made a slow start against Gareth. This may have had something to do the fact that he'd forgotten he was playing tonight and had to text me on the day just to make sure. You muppet Ross.
Pumped up by the derisory comments coming from Mr A Leff (and rightly so) up on the balcony, Ross tucked in his beer belly and increased the tempo to turn the match around to win 3-1.
Didn't see Steve and Peter's match, but the score suggests a comfortable win for Steve. This was only Steve's second appearance for the team this season due to his globe trotting with work (or so he says), but it was nice to hear that old habits die hard as Steve disappeared from the balcony to go and have his usual pre-match pooh.
After I’d beaten Karl 3-0 in the cup I thought he would be up for this match and looking to get revenge. Karl definitely made a harder fight of it, but unfortunately for Karl it was the same result.
So at 4-0 up and with only Nick and Mike to play I was mentally chalking off a 5-0 win and 20 points given that Nick had beaten Mike in the recent cup match. However, Mick had other ideas and out played Nick to win 3-1.
Up on the balcony Nick's team mates were taking odds on what this weeks excuse would be. Having used the old "house move" excuse last week, unless he was a serial house mover we were waiting for a different excuse this week. As it turned out this weeks excuse was the even older "long working hours". To be fair Nick did accept that he got beat by the better player, but why let the truth get in the way of a bit of rib taking.
In the bar we were just starting on the dessert when Mr Pusey discovered a bowl of roast potatoes still in the oven. (An old Ali Mac trick). After deciding they tasted crap Steve offered the potatoes to the group of tennis guys at the bar. Turns out the potatoes had been in the oven from Sunday's club roast dinners so it was no wonder the tennis guys were not appreciative of Mr Pusey’s generous offer. |
