Report: | It was likely to be a close encounter given the line-up but when Nick and Peter M both lost their matches to Alan and Karen the warning bells were ringing. Alan took a game to get into his stride and then dominated to the end. Peter and Karen had a tighter game from the start and Peter rescued the 4th to level the match, intending to keep the momentum but Karen's guile won through in the 5th.
Meanwhile, Brian was struggling against a determined Mandy, on form and with a clear game plan. Her drops and boasts were inch perfect and things went from bad to worse for Brian when his racket strings snapped. With the win for Nuffield assured, it was left to Ron and Kevin to rescue a few points. This Ron did with his usual efficiency despite Peter W's consistent winning shots on his backhand return of serve and his temporary reversal of what seemed inevitable by winning the 3rd game.
Kevin was in cracking form from the start and it seemed that he and Peter Y would exit quickly to the bar. But Peter upped his game and, combined with a dip in Kevin's consistency took the match to a 5th. At this point Kevin's form returned and a tiring Peter had no response to the crisp low drives and neat boasts.
Well done Nuffield Health 1! A worthy win to assume the no 2 spot in Div 4. |
