Report: | This week's opponents were Poultwood who were just above us in the league so a good win could mean we swap places.
On paper I had Dan to beat Robin, but that was assuming Dan would take notice of the advice to stop his showboating shots and to stop boasting the ball from the back of court while your opponent is at the front of the court. Seems that Dan's brain was only able to compute one of these instructions as he continued to hand Robin easy kill shots from his boasts. At two games down the brain finally took onboard instruction number two and Dan fought back to make it two games each. In the final game the steam coming from Dan's ears suggested the brain had overloaded and was shutting down, hence Dan lost the fifth 1-9.
On the back of last week's win Steve was in confident mood. Having had his pre-match phoo Steve won the first game but from then on Craig was much more competitive and took the next three games. As his company's CEO Steve was concerned about his image given that his staff had read the "phoo" reference in last week's match report. Well I can tell his staff not to worry - it doesn't stink. Keep smiling Steve!
Ross made his customary slow start to allow David to take the first game. Ross then settled down to take the next two games and looking good to win the match. Don’t know what happened as I was marking, but Ross managed to snatch defeat from the hands of victory to lose 2-3.
As Ashley joined me on the court I was reaching for the dress code rules to see if "cycling shorts" and “meat & two veg” appeared anywhere in the same sentence. The rallies were fast and furious but Ashley made far too many unforced errors which allowed me to win 3-0.
Nick said there would be no excuses if he performed badly this week given that he’s now safely tucked up in his new house, has cut his weekly working hours and has given the dog a pre-match walk around the club car park. This new found karma certainly helped as Nick and Ben played some good quality squash with Nick playing the better controlled shots. Each game was competitive but Ben made some errors at crucial moments to allow Nick to win the match 3-1.
So, although we won more games (11 games to 10) than Poultwood, we ended up losing the match. Bizarre. Hopefully we can get back onto winning ways next week, but if not then be warned, it might be the return of super hip, Ali Mac!
The banter at dinner was a mix of footy and the habits of Nick’s dog! I think it’s time Nick moved on and got a new woman in his life.
Strange that all of the Poultwood guys didn’t eat the new potatoes. Seems they must have read last week’s report. |
