Report: | Given the snow in November meant we were unable to play Nuffield Health II at their place, this match was a double header with a maximum of forty points at stake.
Paul and I at number 2 were on first. It was nip and tuck for the early points in the first game as I had underestimated Paul’s speed around court and he retrieved some of my shots that I’d assumed were winners. As the match went on I managed reduce my mistakes whilst Paul was starting to tire from being moved around the court. 3-0 to me and 6 points in the bag.
On the other court were the number 4’s, Graham & David. By the time I started watching Graham was leading 2-1 in games and 7-0 up in the fourth. So, given Graham only needed a couple more points to win the match, Nick started warming up assuming he’d be on court pretty soon. Nick obviously doesn’t know Graham. David managed to force the game into a tie breaker but not after Graham had lost four match points. After another four match points Graham eventually won the match 3-1. However, by this time Nick was now exhausted by his prolonged warm up and needed a rest before going on.
At number 3, Dan and Mark had a closely fought first game that Dan just won 9/7. Thereafter Dan was in control and won 3-0 but Mark never stopped running and kept the pressure on Dan right up to the last point.
Nick and Will eventually went on court following Graham & David. Not sure if Will understood the concept of a double header because he went to his own club first. Hopefully this was just a misunderstanding and that he didn’t think you had to play two matches at two clubs on the same night. Anyway, back to the match. I’m afraid it was a case of déjà vu with Nick looking the better player but never fully able to find a winner and thereby giving his opponent hope. Nick won the first easily enough but then lost the next and just nosed ahead in the next two to win the match 3-1.
With the match won there was no pressure on Paul who was playing John at number 5. At 7/2 up in the first game Paul was looking comfortable and I was chalking off a clean sweep with a maximum of 40 points. However, Paul is of a similar school as Graham and you learn never count your chickens. And so it proved, Paul lost the match 3-0. I wasn’t going to mention the number of stokes Paul conceded as it was embarrassingly high, so I won’t.
