Report: | With two BCC players having to withdraw (one through injury and the other through having bad musical taste – Graham went to watch Status Quo) in came team reserves Paul and Ali.
This was Ali’s first match for the team since his hip operation earlier in the year. Ali was understandably a little rusty (a reference to his squash rather than his metallic hip) and lost the first game. At 5-3 up in the second game Ali was gaining in confidence, but then it all went depressing bad. Moving to play what would have been a simple winning shot, Ali’s knee suddenly gave way. Although he tried to play on it was clear that the injury was serious and Ali had to retire. This was a kick in the teeth for Ali given all the hard work he’s put in to get back playing again, but I’m sure he will come back stronger than ever.
Our other reserve, Paul, was also having a bad time of it and soon found himself two games down to Richard. With his unbeaten run of three consecutive matches looking like it was coming to an end, Paul defied the odds and fought back to two games each. Having taken a 7-0 lead in the fifth, Paul was now looking odds on to maintain his unbeaten record. But things are never straight forward with Paul (just ask his wife) and he let Richard come back to 7-7. Fortunately, Richard made three unforced errors to give the match to Paul. And so the unbeaten run continues.
Having seen the previous Old Elthamians players all wearing supports of one description or another on various parts of their bodies , I went on court to find Justin wearing his support around his head aka McEnroe style although without the attitude and without the hair. Justin started the better and punished some of my loose shots to take an early lead. However, I just managed to win the first game and then tightened up my shots to take the next two games a little more comfortably.
Dan was under instructions from yours truly to make sure he was fully warmed up before his match with Steve given his tendency to always loose the first game. Something must have clicked because Dan won the first game 9-3. My spy tells me that Dan then fell back into his old ways in the second game and lost it 7-9, but after some frank feedback from the balcony he then got back to basics to win the match 3-1.
Having managed to get Nick to stop talking, he finally went on court with Bob. This time the Old Elthamians player was wearing his neoprene support around both knees. I’m sure that if you were to put all the Old Elthamians blue neoprene supports on one player then they would have to nominate him as a Smurf. Anyway, I digress, back to the match. Nick won the first two games but frustratingly he wouldn’t take the simple drop shot winner and instead continually played it back to Bob who was standing at the back of the court. Finding himself 7-8 down in the third, Nick did at last try to play some winning drop shots but by now had forgotten how this was done and ended up loosing the game. In the fourth Nick was back to his frustrating best and gave Bob every opportunity to stay in the rallies. The game went to a tie break and Bob had his chances but made a couple of errors to give Nick the win.
So a good win for BCC but tainted by the injury to Ali. |
