Report: | The evening started with Richard taking on Ron. The first game of sounding each other out brought the best from Richard who then faded under Ron's onslaught. Meanwhile Dave and Nick's marathon was under way. Neither player was happy with his game, and Dave was slightly under the weather - though his speed around the court didn't seem to suffer: he picked up all Nick's boasts. The balance tipped when Nick found length on his serves and drives, but Dave was always a threat until the last point was won. Mark (N) and Paul (W) had a close match that I saw little of, but Paul couldn't control the ball quite enough in adjusting to Mark's court speed. However, for ultimate movement about the court we must look to Darren. Mark (F) found nowhere to bury the ball that Darren couldn't reach and dig it out, and he was tireless. Mark managed to slow the game (relatively) enough to sneak the third game only to find that Darren came back more strongly in the fourth. Finally, Paul (F), a more strategic player than his speedier team-mates, found Brian more of a handful than previously. After the effort of winning the third to stay in the match, the energy needed to stay in touch ebbed away as Brian resumed control.
Five very entertaining and quality matches and a much closer encounter than the form book might suggest. |
