Report

Report: Whilst BLTSC2 were weakened on the night by the late withdrawal of their no 2, this was nothing compared with injury-hit NH1 who had to trawl their 2nd team to complete the line-up. The result was a very close and exciting match. Paul & Peter (Y) kicked off - most appropriately as Paul was keen to get to the wide screen to see his beloved Spurs in action (he brought his other beloved along for potential consolation in case they were to lose). Peter, nice chap, didn't want to delay the fun in either respect. Meanwhile Peter (M) was calling on his years of experience to out-perform the athletic Dave, not quite managing it on the night. Another 10 years should do it. Next on Karen and Mark. Karen relied on good length and width and tight serves and above all consistency. Mark had the bigger guns but they misfired too often. His usually dependable drops let him down too, through a mixture of over-running and perhaps anxiety. To an almost empty balcony Mandy and Ron played quality squash, every point earned through effort and resourcefulness. Ron's greater power helped but, remarkably, he matched Mandy for speed to the ball, picking up her usually winning drops. The score-line, like many of the shots in this delightful match, is deceptive.
So, at 2-2, it was left to Alan and Nick to settle the account. Alan's serves, especially to Nick's backhand, dropped awkwardly out of the sky and when Nick did manage to return them Alan was ready with inch-perfect drops. The writing seemed on the wall for Bromley until Nick rediscovered an old friend - his boast. True, he instantly forgot it again in the 4th but by then Spurs had won and the gallery was merry with encouragement. Just Alan and Paul's wife felt a bit out-done by events, and victory went to BLTSC, just.
One final question remains: why does NH1 eat so much better than NH2?!
