Report: | Paul and Dean led off with a noisy encounter (squash roars, the equivalent to tennis grunts). By contrast, Tom and Tony seemed to play in complete silence. The crowd obviously enjoyed the roars, or possibly the long, strategic rallies between a steadily improving Dean and birthday-boy Paul who had to dig deep to win the crucial points. Tony meanwhile was struggling with his boasts, usually inch-perfect, and possibly his fitness, tested often by Tom's floating drop-shots.
Mark and Scott produced another close one, the youngster running for everything whilst Scott actually reached the ball. In the event, Mark played a few more accurately placed shots and won the day for Bromley.
Ron seemed about to coast to victory against Dan but was then drawn into Dan's faster game and nearly wore himself out. With victory within his grasp Dan wound up for some mighty killer drives in response Ron's impertinent (and in fact rather desperate) lobs but the resulting mishits handed Ron the match. But - credit to Dan - he took it in good spirit.
For Brian it was a night to forget. It is a long wait when all four previous matches have been class acts, the match decided and the spectators wondering whether to go for a shower or a refill. Rob was determined that Bexley should avoid a whitewash and exploited weaknesses in Brian's game that most others wouldn't have seen. He played off Brian's pace when required but more often just watched where Brian was sprinting off to and placed the ball somewhere else. Simple! Or at least Rob made it look so, and for Brian a nightmare at no. 3. Even Paul's birthday cake didn't sweeten the bitterness of Brian's first defeat in quite a while!
No matter, Bexley are still on course for the runner-up position and Bromley thoroughly enjoyed the return match - and their victory. |
