Report

Report:Last match of the season and it was between us and Bromley LT to see who finished third.

First on were Steve & Mark. After Steve had only just scrapped a win last week against an opponent he should have beaten comfortably, I thought this result could go either way. Oh me of little faith. Steve was red hot and almost everything he hit was a winner. 3-0 to Steve. I guess Steve’s customary pre-match dump must have been a good one and that carnal relationships with Mrs P must have been good since last week.

On the other court were Dan & Paul. Dan has been on a good run of form lately and given that he beat Paul when they meet in the first half of the season, I had this down as a BCC win. Oh me of too much faith. Paul moved Dan around the court and always had control of the rallies to win 3-0. Back to the drawing board Dan.

Next on were the number 5’s Graham and Nick. I feared for Graham given that Nick was a former number 1 at Nuffield Health. Didn’t see any of this match but Graham did well and only just lost 2-3.

Having come back from 2 games down to beat Brian 3-2 the last time we meet, this time I decided to stand further forward on the tee to cover Brian’s boasts. Although the match was a bit scrappy with some loose rallies by both players, the tactic worked a treat and I had relatively comfortable 3-0 win.

So at 2 matches each it was down to the number 1’s. I thought my pre-match instructions to Nick not to piss about this week would go in one ear and out of the other, but apart from a couple of momentary lapses of concentration, Nick was ruthless with his finishing and took the first two games convincingly. In the third game Nick did ease off slightly but Ron also played better with more winning drop shots. However, Nick managed to hold it together to win the match 3-0.

So BCC finished the season third, but it should have been second had the Priory Committee deducted points from Bexley for breaking the rules when they played a first team player against us even though he had already played down twice before. But unlike the Murphy’s, I’m not bitter.

Back in the bar there was a funny old smell. I thought it was Graham’s moth balls but it turned out to be our fish pie dinner. There are only two things that smell of fish and one of them is fish.

After dinner talk was about getting new blood in so that we can push for promotion next season. If we can’t find any new players then we may have to go for second best and line up Graham, Phil and Paul for a blood transfusion and also find a way of reversing the aging process.
