Report

Report:PL1 hosted Bexley 1 for last night's match. After much griping about getting short shrift on the court allocations, the 1st team magnanimously agreed to play fair, only to see the first of the 3rd team's opposition roll in around 8.20 p.m (and I thought we were bad)!

Anyway, onto the match:

First up London jnr v Ford.
The usual encounter between these two. Highly entertaining, with Steve covering a marathon's distance worth of court, Ben cruising effortlessly around as normal and both players slapping in nicks for fun. The massive expenditure of effort by Steve took its toll and despite nearly battling back to take the 4th (a missed volley on a good opening at 7-8 being a telling blow), the new O35 Open champ took the match. A great spectacle.

Next door, Pratt v Knight.
With Bexley a little short of personnel, Elliot got a promotion. Didn't see too much of this one but Whirlwind recovered well from an iffy start to take the match, despite being a mile behind in the 4th (let's just belabour the point about comebacks happening with HiHo). A good win for WW.

Next on London snr v Masters (even more) jnr.
This is getting ridiculous now. A 41 year gap in ages between the two protagonists left the author clutching for his bath chair, but despite this feeling relieved to have got Brad early on in his career. Looking promising once the strength has built up some more. A bit too canny on the night, but give it a couple of years ...

Straight on after this on the graveyard court, Lennox v Masters (not quite so) jnr
Well, Mark really does not seem to be enjoying his squash at the moment. The stresses and strains of work and a new family member (something a fair few of us can probably relate to) combined with a conspicuous lack of squash over the last several months saw Mark climbing the walls with frustration. I felt his pain from the marking chair, and the combination of too many loose balls and Josh's lethal front court game put paid to any chances of another PL win. A brief flurry in the 3rd saw the PL coaching team's advice put to good use up 'til 5-0 in front, but sadly the tactics drifted off a bit thereafter and Josh got it back to win in 3. Never seen Mark so hacked off after a game.

Back on the civilised court, Robbins v Fallows.
Living up to his well deserved reputation, JEJ had hot-footed it back from Bexley (despite the text the previous day telling him it was at home)! Nevertheless, Richie having been champing at the bit to get on all evening looked to be playing very well from the small bit I saw at the start. Once again though, JEJ had the experience in the locker and despite not being too happy with his latest restring and feeling a bit sluggish, did what he does to so many - loops them around on a piece of string. The battle raged on for a very long time though with a hard fought 3-1 being the match decider on the night.

So, all in all a good match. I can't believe the average age of the Bexley team (even with "old man" Ford) was only 19. Still, good news really, and a thoroughly entertaining evening of squash. A bit thin on the ground in the bar afterwards but at least we managed to supplement Brad's education around egg "oaks"!
