Report

Report:Quick summary from me as the main author was absent, it’s a slow morning, and most importantly there were some cracking games.

First up Jonny vs Martin – saw a bit of the opening 2 games which went one way then the other. At one a piece the match tightened up a bit with Martin edging ahead and getting very close to the line – 8-5 match ball up in the 4th in fact. Didn’t see any of Jonny’s sterling come back but he did look pretty pleased with himself in the bar afterwards. Well played and first blood to TW.

Paul vs Darren – first time we’ve seen Darren this way and in the opening salvo he looked like he would have a little too much about him for Paul. With “good touch for a big man” Darren built up a decent lead in the 1st, only to blow it with a series of tins whilst Paul reduced his error count dramatically. Paul converted his 5th game point to win 10-9 and go one up. Didn’t see anymore of this as had to get on myself at this point but I did advise our man to play “stick in a few more drop shots”. Was told afterwards I wasn’t specific enough and should have added “above the tin”. However, from the score line and reports this was a well contested match played in good spirit. Paul eventually ran out a 3-2 winner having come back from 2-1 down, which rather fortuitously sealed the victory for TW with PL1 having started a man short.

Me vs James – don’t need to write much here, except perhaps from my perspective it was an improvement on our last encounter when I got taken back to squash skool. Usual form from JEJ, giving me an extremely hard earned 2-0 lead before just upping the effort enough to reel me in over the next 3. All good fun though!

Final game, James vs Steve: James coming back from his ankle injury and looking a little more confident in his movement than last week. Steve playing his unique brand of highly entertaining squash. Steve took the 1st quite comfortably, but over the next 3 James managed to counter Steve’s style and impose himself a bit more to close out a 4 game win - the quickest of the night.

Food was well earned by all and provided by Domino’s. There was also a 2:1 ratio of lucozade sport to match participants which says a lot about the games! Discussions included Rory Mcilroy’s career, racquet technology, and how many lifts James will owe his team mates by the time he passes his driving test. Great match and looking forward to the return.
