Report: | It wasn’t quite SW19 but there was some decent racket skills on show at SE24 as Dulwich took on King Kenny’s Park Langley II. Its always a tough battle even without Grant or Sharpes, and the fact that by the close Olleys had almost shut for orders was testament that it was no different this time around.
First up Tim took on Michael, with the latter smashing the ball around in his usual flamboyant. However, the week before the Dulwich man heads off to the sunshine tour in SA is when he is usually at his sharpest and so this proved as he opened up a two game lead throwing in the odd backhand topspin that even the Fed Express would have been proud of. However, Michael wasn’t about to Kvitova, and came out firing in the third racing through it with relative ease. Tim steadied the ship in the fourth to put the homeside one up.
Meanwhile Steve Sharapova was tussling with Simon. Rather like his captain, Steve started well opening up a 2-game lead but got pegged back in the third before re-asserting his authority in the fourth. Jack, as has become his habit also opened up a two-game lead before starting to wilt in the heat. Unlike his Scottish namesake, Andy dug in and started to real Robinsons back in, pulling things back to 2-2. However, once again Jack showed he is never quite as tired as he looks and found just enough juice in the tank to fall over the line and win in 5.
A similar scenario looked to be unfolding on the other court as smashanova Zeb crunched his way to a two game lead over Will. The latter was perhaps a little complacent after his big win over Sam last week, but looked to be in to trouble at two down. Some brutal rallies at the start saw eb trying to get home in 3 and Will determined to hang in there. In the end, Zeb finally started to run out of steam and then eventually out of fumes and Will eased home in 5.
With King Kenny looking down from the players’ box, the match was rounded off in style as Kenneth took out Lee. Leaping around the court like a man on some serious Tomic, Kenneth kept the pace up and despite Lee’s best efforts wrapped up a 5-0 win for Dulwich.
And so as Strawberries & cream is to Wimbldeon, the Mardy & chips from Olleys is to a Dulwich home match, rounding it off in style. As always some fun chat ensued but one topic that wasn’t explored fully was who would win arm wrestle out of Will & Zeb? Despite his team’s lack of confidence, Will assured us that his bear (bare?) strength would win. We just didn’t want to see him hurt ...!
