Report

Report:PL 1 entertained Bromley CC last night in a busy (and noisy) evening at Langley Towers. Most of the noise it has to be said was coming from the adjoining court where the 3rds were battling manfully against the Surrey Cup imports from David Lloyd. Still, back to more important matters:

Since it was the usual situation of mutually mismatched players present, and since the author was walking down the corridor just as Sam's text saying "U turning up?" arrived, the first one on was London snr v Stabler.
This was a long match. After a steady start by both, the author lost his way a bit, and some tricky flicky winners from Sam resulted in a comfortable 1st game. After inflicting a cross court drive into Sam's leg in the 2nd (sorry Sam), the pattern seemed to change. Looking and definitely sounding quite subdued by his normal standards, Sam was rather more in reactive mode than normal. It was a good game (well from my perspective it felt it), but not one of Sam's best. The author ground it out, and Sam put in a few mistakes here and there and the result ended up with an unexpectedly good start for PL, who were struggling big time on the personnel front.

Next door, London jnr v Baker.
Only saw the 5th game in this one, since it lasted even longer. Steve went 2-0 down as Neil apparently played well to take control having made a big comeback in the 2nd. As later observed by Mark, it seems that the role of the absent JEJ has been temporarily replaced by JES (just enough Steve - keep up at the back there). Steve duly clawed his way back and took the 4th and 5th fairly comfortably (scorewise at least - they still looked tough). So, a decidedly rosy PL start.

Next on, Lennox v Ryall.
Lewy looked almost horizontally casual at the start of this. With Mark still battling his way back to fitness and having to cover a lot of court, the first two games were a lot of effort for little reward. Mark should have won the 2nd, but a lapse of concentration near the end caused it to get away. The 3rd was a formality as Lewy scampered around the court in his usual fleet footed mannner, leaving Mark gasping in his wake.

Next door, Grant v Horder.
Again, peripheral vision was my only sight of this while marking, but it seemed as though Trevor was causing Matt a lot of problems with his, let's be charitable and say, awkward style. Trev should have won the 1st, did win the 2nd, and until mid way through the 3rd, looked like causing a potential upset. Sadly, after that point he faded a bit and Matt took the 4th comfortably to square the match.

Last on for the match, Rich v McMeckan.
Having been there early doors, marked and generally seized up, this was a big ask for Adam, standing in for the woefully depleted 1sts. The first rally was a tough one, and James looked in no mood to mess about as he powered the ball around to take command. After the first, he uncharacteristically started lofting quite a few to the back, but the accuracy was such that it proved effective. Adam was under the cosh in pretty much every rally, and despite putting in a number of his trademark low boasts, the match looked destined for the BCC man from the off - and so it proved.

So, a creditable showing from PL all told, and Lennox and Bushell ripped it out of the old man in the changing rooms afterwards, with DC dining out one more time on that old Surrey Cup chestnut where they both sat chuckling in the gallery watching some young buck running court sprints prior to the knock up thinking he'd got an easy touch coming against "that old git", when DC & ML knew it was going to be like watching some poor sap playing Peter Willmor for the first time.

Depleted numbers in the bar afterwards, with Neil heading for the wilds of Sittingbourne and Sam sending apologetic texts to James, but at least it kept the number of Peronis to a minimum. A good evening all round as ever with the BCC boys.
