Report

Report:The aura surrounding the Dulwich boys once again proved too much for pretenders PL1 last night. On the face of it this was all set to be a highly competitive match with PL close to full strength. With the 1sts on rota for the 2nd tier courts, things took a turn for the worse when it turned out that the graveyard court was living up to its name with only 2 out of 6 sets of lights working! So, a court rotation exercise with the 3rds (also battling Dulwich) was undertaken.

London jnr v Garner
Unusually, the normally strong and reliable top end disappeared with a whimper. Steve's mind was obviously firmly on his tournament the next day, being caught between killing himself in his usual fashion to wring any spare change out of Tim, or preserving the energy levels for the more important one the next day. In the end neither won out really as he looked thoroughly cheesed off at capitulating in such uncharacteristic fashion whilst denting his mental preparation. 3-0 to Tim.

London snr v Petronzio
The one bright spot in PL's evening really. The author kept up the recent good form and got into stride fairly early to control this one with the exception of the few points at the start of the 1st and end of the 3rd. 3-0 to the author.

Lennox v Brownsdon
Will was right up for this one having never previously beaten Mark. Well, the wait was clearly worth it. I didn't see any of this due to playing duties, but it seems as though Will had a bit too much in the locker for Mark on this occasion. Mark still seems to be on the up slope to his normal levels after a long time out, and hopefully a few more matches will see him restored to former glories. 3-0 to Will.

Robbins v Chan
Once again on paper this looked to be a corker in prospect, with Kenneth having turned Guy Olby over earlier in the season. Sadly 6 weeks without playing, and a few too many burgers on his annual sojourn to the US of A did JEJ no favours at all. JEJ really had nothing much in the tank as Kenneth chased everything down and controlled the match pretty easily to take a comfortable victory. 3-0 to Kenneth.

So, with the result already decided, last on were Pratt v Moore
WW's appearance had been in doubt right up 'til 8pm in case selected to douse the riot induced fires of the capital, but having managed to get away as scheduled at the end of his shift, he duly turned up for his second duty shift at PL. A good start for WW followed by Andy getting the 2nd back and Steve steadying the flow of errors to take the 3rd, saw the PL man poised on the cusp of a good victory. Sadly, at this point, despite the well founded advice from the PL coaching staff to cut the outrageous winner attempts back and steady up with a few more working rallies, it appeared that this message had got through to Andy instead. He just let WW beat himself, which it has to be said he did with aplomb. 17 points in a row. Having dispatched yet another new racket to meet its maker at 0-8 in the 5th WW then belatedly decided to utilise the advice from after the 3rd and played well to get it back to 5-8. Sadly it was not to be, with Andy finally triumphing in the match of the evening.

So, all in all a very disappointing night for PL. The Dulwich juggernaut thunders on apace, with no buffers in sight nor prospect of a derailment any time soon. Well played Dulwich - again ...
