Report

Report:A strange evening and no mistake last night. Mainly due to the "discussions" that ensued on the neighbouring courts in the 3rd team match (of which more later). Still, onto the match (for those involved please apply appropriate adjustments). Much pre match texting and phoning had been the order of the day. The author had foolishly assumed that the initial assumption that for the one time in the season the whole squad was available was correct. Wrong. A Surrey Cup clash, work commitments and loans to other teams had to be hastily unpicked and worked around so as to not present BLTC with their second default win after BCC the other week.

First up Culver v Shaw.
Didn't see any of this one but it looks to have been a routine affair with Simon coming through for a straightforward victory.

Next door Pratt v Patel.
Once again no real input on this one. WW looks to have done the business, and from the few glances on the next court that I got, much earnest scurrying back and forth was occurring. Steve obviously kept the focus to overcome a very mobile Ket in 4 games.

Next up London snr v McManus.
For the umpteenth time in long squash careers, these two old stagers did battle once again. Gordon seemed to be suffering from his usual problems on courts that are (a) not all white and (b) not brilliantly lit - though the illumination seemed ok to me. Combine that with his traditional slow start and the author was out of the blocks quickly. Despite both ending up in a heap on the floor in the 2nd rally, the 1st game was done in a trice. As is tradition, Gordon then started to wake up a bit and find his range, and the author had to pull back a big deficit in the 3rd before nearly letting it get away, eventually running out a 3-0 winner.

Next door Robbins v Jeal.
Ted looked to be in pretty sparkling form, drawing the usual comments about what he might be like if he could be *rsed to take it seriously. Winners and seemingly effortless gets abounded. A good match to mark and watch, played at a high pace. Ted had too much on the night though and ran out a fairly comfortable winner despite a very tight 1st game.

Last match of the night, Thompson v Easton.
Nick had obviously been stung by the cruel (if brief) barbs from his captain-in-absentia after the match against Bexley, and played very well here against Martin. Things looked to be in the PL man's control after 3 games. The early uncharacteristic slow start had been overcome, and Martin took the next two in commanding style. This wasn't really the usual Thompson switch off either. Martin became the 3rd PL player on the night to complain of feeling light headed and lacking in energy, and Nick ran everything down to keep making him win (or lose) the rallies. A fine comeback ensued with Nick still looking pretty fresh after a long hard run. A good win for Nick.

Most of the fun of the evening now kicked off. DC (unless he's changed his mind by now) has decided, perhaps wisely, to hold his counsel and forgo a match report. It seems as though having battled to a good win against BCC 2nd team, the 3rd team found that their normally very reliable no.2 (the G.Reaper) had broken down on his brand new motorbike and was loath to leave it on its own (unsurprisingly), and was consequently unable to make it.

Now whilst Big Andy was within his rights to claim the entire match on this basis, it did seem to be rather lacking in the spirit of the game department. This was all discussed at length by the courts and in the bar. The fact that the 3rds in a previous match had waited until 10pm for Nick Peel to turn up (for BCC 2nds), lost the match on the strength of it and taken it on the chin seemed to cut little ice. Much talk about "well you put three 1st team players out against us before", conveniently forgetting the appearances of messrs Stabler and Ryall in his own team etc etc ensued, but all to no avail. More forum and AGM fodder methinks ...
