Report: | Gawd, here we go again.
As first matches of the season goes, this was a stonker. Strangley, all winners went 2 down before clawing back the next three apart from the 1's.
First up:
Dan v Eyeball Adam
Didn't see a shot of this one but did see them both coming off court dripping. Obviously a lot of hard graft with Adam seeming to get stronger as the match went on and Dan getting a bit fiesty with Martin the marker.
Pete v Debt Collector
I'm starting to get a bit peeved with Pete ! There used to be a time not so long ago when I would turn up and give him a good duffing. Last time I played him at the end of the winter season he was on fire for 2 games and I had to work my nuts off to win 3-2. 'That's not going to happen again this time' me thinks. Bugger me, he hit drops from everywhere over the court and seemed to find the nick at his leisure. once again DC 2 zip down in double quick time and 4-1 down in the 3rd before a couple of chinks in the armour appeared. The long hard graft back was underway and eventually DC closed out the 5th. Either Pete is getting a lot better or I'm dropping down the ladder. A bit of both is likely. Well played Pete, tough match but right spirit.
Toby v Zimbabwean Warthog
Very much a game of 2 halves. Toby started playing simple length squash and punishing anything loose that ZW offerd. This in turn meant ZW doing a lot of running which was clearly taking a toll. A quick conflab in the red corner before the 3rd seemed to do the trick. The tables were literally reversed with ZW playing measured controlled squash and Toby Blowing out his *rse. Good Win for ZW and a good match from both lads.
Nathan v Sweaty Sock
DC hoping to see a new lean mean Sweaty for the new season but nope. Six weeks of leisure and fine eating seems to have been order of the day on the wrong side of the border. That said, Sweaty has never had a problem hitting great shots and no exception last night. For 2 games Sweaty rained in shots from all quarters leaving Nathan a little shell shocked which takes some doing as Nathan is one of the best retrievers in the league. The 3rd saw Nathan step up the pace and Sweaty step down and the result was always going to go Nathan's way. Again, really good match to watch.
Martin v Not so simple Simon
A long fast hard hitting match with two fit lads working very hard on bloody hot courts.
It looked to me like Martin would have to much in the locker for Si but to his credit,Si worked his nuts off and nicked the first after being 8-3 down. The pace did not relent for the next 3 games with Martin reversing the compliment in the fourth by coming back from 4-8 down. A little bit of hand bags at the end but hugs and kisses eventually.
All in all a good win for the ugly bunch but both teams can take a lot of credit from the evening. It's not often you see a losing team get 12 points which shows how close the whole night was.
Lastly just a word to say this was a great advert for proper scoring. Lots of hard matches which sorted the men from the boys. That's how squash should be when games are tight. If 5 setters are done and dusted in 40 minutes your work rate can never really be tested. Par converts might say by us not finishing until 11.15 this was a bad advert for HiHo but like most matches in Priory these days, we didn't get going until 8. Don't let the scoring ever be the excuse for late nights until matches start at 7.30 again. (Park Langley take note, where the worst for starting late)
Right off my soapbox and on with my life !
