Report: | Wasn't sure if I had the right day for this one. Arrived with Fordy and Steve of the firsts for 7.30 kick off but not another soul to be seen. Hmmm.
Court allocation seemed confusing with Steve & Ben starting on the middle one. Still, well worth it,the squash was top drawer and our opposition didn't start rolling up until 8.20.
First up:
Captain Carrot Top v Keith
Carrot Top fresh back (well not so fresh actually) from 4 day lash up at the I.O.W. music festival but you would never have known. Carrot Top started strongly taking the first easily. Keith got going in the second which was very nip and tuck. Carrot Top scraped it 10/9 which sealed the match. Didn't see the 3rd but it sounded fairly comfortable. A very good win for Carrot Top as Keith is a tricky customer at any time but more so when you have been wrestling Stellas all weekend.
Tom v John
Tom also not to fresh having just completed a marathon journey from York but he soon got rolling by taking the first 9/5. the next 2 were comfortable for Tom once he started to read Johns tricky boasts.
Adam the Eyeball v Craig
Didn't see any of this one but sounds like a good scrap. Craig telling me he only started to get a read on Adams boasts half way through the fourth. Leaving it a bit late but Craig took it in 5.
Debt Collector v 'Axel Rose' Lamprell
Fresh back from the States and looking bloody ridiculous with his silly Guns & Roses bandana,Axel took to the court looking tanned and ready to rock !!
Now I've only ever beaten Axel once and that was when he'd just had a dirty great steel plate inserted in his head and a tricky haircut to prove it. Much running around like a headless chicken in the first and second by DC just to keep in the rallies with Axel pretty much controlling proceedings. All to no avail with Axel going 2/0 up and things looked grim again for DC. Axel at this point broke out into 'Sweet child of mine' and took his foot off the gas which gave DC a sniff and he took full advantage clawinig back the next two. Into a 5th and things were now getting very tight with both players working very hard but not as hard as Warthog who seemed to be flagging in the marking chair !
Axel eventually got to 8/6 but DC battled back to 8/8. lots of rallies and lets later, DC sqeaked it 10/9. A bloody good game with both players having lots of laughs between games. Both were in agreement that Warthog was a rubbish marker and they would have been better off doing it themselves (only joking D, we both agreed a wind up in the report was required. good job mate)
Warthog v Steptoe
So once again a return from retirement for Steptoe for the umpteenth time.(more come backs than George Foreman!)
The way the first two games went, another spell of retirement was looming for Steptoe with Warthog continuing his good run of form recently but I guess another prolonged spell of ear bending from 'Arold' was more than he could take and finally got going and running Warthog out of legs. A good game of two halves but both players playing in the right spirit.
S0 a good win for the ugly bunch condidering their top 3 were missing ( and still no sign of two of them back any time soon) Still, who needs superstars when you can grind out results without them. Besides, we had Axel Rose for entertainement and it dosn't get any better than that !! |
