Report

Report:Well done to our 3rd team for doing the double over us. It occured to me during my epic match with Noades that perhaps I had been a wee bit generous in the players allocated to their squad, but it is always heartening to see the club as a whole doing well.

We were short a player or two but unlike some, from what I read and assuming it is accurate, we do not have access to superstars who play in Surrey division 1.

What we did have was a healthy influx of Ivy League squash players all good enough to play at number 1 but now they have returned we need our regulars to step up and be counted. Sadly that did not happen with the 2nds, save for Winnick whose match with Petronzio seemed to be a competition of who could hit the ball hardest. Winnick winning the squash 3-1 with the jury hung on the other competition.

My match with Noades was the usual 90 minute lung buster. A good natured affair this with a 2-0 lead surrendered in an all too charitable manner. Age I am finding is the most difficult opponent of all.

Ruff was overcome by Armstrong who is in form after a few seasons of indifferent squash. This was over all too quickly and given that Steibelt had failed to beat Kettle the remaining match was a dead rubber.

For posterity however it should be noted that Caine, the Yale man, beat Harsum in the number 1 encounter with much to spare. Headline writers could have a field day with the obvious one being "2nds cained" to the less so "Caine key to 3rds success".

Of course having a top number 1 means everyone played down not one place but two with Antonio Petronzio making a rare appearance. With this team the 3rds would be unbeatable in the league - other than by that team with the Surrey Division 1 players of course.

IRG: Caine sugar too sweet a desert for seconds as thirds come first.
