Report: | At the start of the evening this always looked a big ask of the ugly bunch to get a result, and so it proved, BUT !!
With the Grim Reaper once more globe trotting and Carrot Top called away last minute to prop up the 2nds in turn with the Dulwich boys in a rich vein of form (their 2nd team is rubbish in comparison apparently, lol Ravi !!) Some stella performances would be required.
Zimbabwien Wort Hog v Alex
Fresh back from Hols and called up at last minute, Wort Hog was the first to step up to the plate and deliver. A solid all round performance apart from a blip in the 3rd. Alex to his credit ran everything down but Wort Hog played the controlling game to good effect.
Lock, Stock and 2 smoking barrels v 'The pony express'
Last time these two played in the first half it was a fairly comprehensive demolition by the Smoking Barrels. This time however, the roll was well and truly reversed with the Pony Expess in fine form and cracking away winners every time he was given the chance. Maybe it was down to Smoking Barrels having other more sinister events playing on his mind. The Blackberry was constantly pinging away and before you could say 'loot' Smoking Barrels was off into the night to make the most of any opportunities that may come his way.
Adam the Eyeball v Kentucky Caine
The scoreline may suggest otherwise but this was a good scrap with Eyeball giving 100% Whilst Eric put in a full shift covering a lot of court although his portly shape suggested he would not. A good match to watch, with both players working very hard but always in the right spirit. I'm told that Eric, the latest in a long line of Dulwich imports has departed back to the other side of the pond so could all future opposition tone down their team selections to accomodate this loss. ( There playing David LLoyd next week, Hah !)
Debt Collector v Matt 'The Stud' Noades
DC not in good shape with a lingering calf pull from the weekend giving concern. But Locks came up with the answer producing some gay looking stocking from his bag which he assurs me did not come from a looted Ms Selfridges. DC very reluctant to lower his manly status but eventually decided to take one for the team and got on with it.
As it happened, the stocking worked and DC played a blinder and got off with a 3 zip win. I'm going to try bra and suspenders next week and see if my game goes up another notch !
Sweaty Sock v Daddy Dave
Right then, onto the headline act.
Match score at 2/2 with all to play for.
Two players with pretty much identical styles started as they meant to go on. Each took it in turn to play a dreadful shot follwed by outragious nicks, boasts, drops and lobs. I remember Dave hitting one lob that went so high and dropped straight down the line of the back wall into the back wall nick, never seen that before. Well the first 2 games were long and hard fought with Sweaty coming out on top in both. However, this always had a five setter written all over it and so it proved. Dave took the third comfortably followed by a ball buster in the 4th with Sweaty having several match balls and Dave likewise with game balls. Dave finally clinched it on a stroke.
Into the 5th and both players were knackered. This seemed to spur them on to even further crap followed by mad winners. I must point out at this point whilst marking, I had the Pony Expess 'living' every point. I think he worked harder in this one than he did when he was on court ! (good stuff Ian, nothing wrong with enthusiastic support) Dave at 5/2 up seemed to have the upper hand but Sweaty pulled off a couple of stunning drops from the back of the court which seemed out of pure desperation, this coupled with some very tired looking mistakes from Dave evened things up at Guess what? 8/8. Lots of hand in hand outs both ways before Sweaty clinched it on a tight length down the wall which Dave couldn't scrape off. A top notch game with had eveyone biting there nails. Huge credit to how both players conducted them selves, especially Dave who didn't agree with every call I made but got on with it without any fuss.
So a squeeky win for the ugly bunch on a really good evening of squash as it was an all P/L Dulwich affair on all courts. Well played to the Dulwich boys, they played a full part in a tight match. |
