Report: | SHOCK HORROR - Pretty boy dethroned.
Well, it had to happen. He who lives by the sword etc etc. The hitherto unbeaten pretty-boy Lennox finally got his come-uppance.
Whilst it's hard to gloat too much when your team has lost yet again, I feel it would be remiss of me to avoid rubbing Mark's nose in it a bit.
Let's cut straight to the chase. London senior versus the inestimable Lennox. To borrow stylewise from an earlier Lennox v Kimpton match, rarely has Mark been seen to perform with such authority on a squash court.
Despite this, the (now) even less beaten (well at no.2 anyway) London slotted into the match well and blunted Lennox's carefully crafted plans. The match was a fairly straightforward affair with the old crock easing through in three games. This despite a mini-comeback at the end of the 2nd game. Age before beauty obviously.
Some might say (the dare I say it - not quite so handsome these days) Lennox should have stayed on the piste, but he manfully faced the music. Rest assured, he certainly had the piste taken out of him in the bar afterwards.
Whilst all the fun and games were happening on one court, the third of the PL musketeers - Mark Sheldon - was battling with the Terminator on the other. I didn't see any of this, but judging from the occasional howl coming from next door, Andy had a bit too much guile for Mark, running out a comfortable 3-0 winner.
So, that was it. PL feebly managing to muster only three players (again!!) against "mighty Hill" were already beaten. Hill arrived mob-handed with a couple of their regulars keen not to miss out on the fun.
Still, looking on the bright side, it was a well supported evening. Most of the Kent squash officialdom, plus stalwarts Stan and Pat and other assorted glitterati were there to see the match of the night.
London junior v Aldridge is becoming a regular feature. Meeting for the 5th time this season, Steve was looking to turn it round, with Marc having edged most of their encounters.
This was high quality squash from start to finish. Marc with his machine like killer boasts, Steve running them down and trying to get Marc out of his comfort zone.
There was very little in it in either of the first two games, but at about 5-0 up in the 3rd, Steve probably thought he had it cracked. Guess again. Marc battled his way back into the game, making it as hard as possible for Steve to finish the points off.
In the 4th game Marc finally started to miss a few shots. A few tinned drop shots at crucial points in the game, usually at the end of a monumental rally contributed to Steve running out a 3-1 winner.
At least PL saved a bit of face by winning a couple. It's a bit disappointing to be struggling for numbers like this on a regular basis, but that seems to be the pattern all too often at the moment.
Finally, no report would be complete without a(nother) mention of Rich Kimpton. He was very keen to be mentioned in dispatches having tucked up "Laney" in a friendly on a spare court.
He tells me he was awesome, and bring on pretty-boy (or words to that effect). |
